Questions about PBing/Heartburn?

Recommended Posts

Hi Friends! Im six weeks post op and still a learning Lap Bander. The past 2 weeks I have been having mild to moderate heartburn. Sometimes its every meal, other times its not. I had a honey wheat english muffin with pnut butter and a few minutes later I had stomach pain and that chest heartburn pain. Could it be im eating to much and this is causing the heartburn? Alka Seltzer helps but I really cant take because of the aspirine in it. I dont think I had a pb yet, I never have the urge to vomit but if I eat too much Im in pain (full/pain like I ate 2 whole pizzas) Is this a PB? So far I have been tolerating food pretty well but hate this feeling. Is there anything that I should do? (eat less/slower/acid foods etc) Lately it seems everything gives me heartburn. Im taking 1 prilosec/gallbladder daily. Saw my doc and he said its normal to have some heartburn/nausea, wants to see me in 2 months. Do you think Nexium or Prevasid is better, or before meals take Xantac or pepsid. Thanks again!!

It sounds to me like you are having more of a golf ball feeling. Try taking smaller bites & chewing to goo. Try drinking warm liquids before you eat. I have always had big problems with eating any kind of bread, potatoes & potato products & Peanut Butter. You might try laying off these items for a while & see if it helps. I was told to start with Protein & if I'm still not "full" I could eat some veggies & or fruit. My doc & nutritionist said absolutely no bread or starchy foods. Hope this helps! If you truely think it is heartburn & you're having reflux, contact your doc & ask to maybe switch to Prevacid or Nexium. In my opinion, they are both better than Prilosec. I had reflux for years before I was banded. Once I was banded it disappeared!! Praise God!! If I never lost another pound the band would be worth it just to be rid of reflux! Hope it gets better for you!

thank you for your post jessiebear. I have been doing chicken Soup today and no heartburn so far, so I may need to slow down a bit. I was always a fast eater so I have to take things slow. I do get that weird tight feeling in the chest but never once did I vomit.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
