Drinking with Meals

Recommended Posts

So I'm 3 weeks post surgery and all is going well. Following the rules and doing good. I have just graduated off soft foods and have started experimenting with regular food. I cannot seem to get through a meal without drinking. I know all of the ramifications of this behavior, so I'm not looking for a pep talk. I would like to know if anyone has advice on how to get through a meal without drinking. What about eating a couple of ice chips or something? This is just a transitional phase, as I am determined to get to a point where I can eat a meal and then go an hour without Water.< /p>

You've touched upon a controversial subject. Some doctors don't allow it(like yours?) and some doctors encourage taking a sip of Water 1 minute after you swallow your bite of food.

If you don't sit down to eat with glass of Water, you won't drink right? Just don't pour the glass. It's similar to eating chips or chocolate. Don't have them around and you won't be tempted.

RE: The doctors who do allow you to drink. It's my belief that you should follow your doctors orders. And until you learn how to eat with the band(maybe 6 months or more) you should not drink and eat. Otherwise you may not ever learn how to eat slowly, chew big and take small bites. The temptation to swallow and flush it down with liquids is too strong for many to overcome. jmo

I find the best way not to drink while I am eating is not to have the glass anywhere near me.... otherwise I automatically reach for it.

Thank you all. These are helpful. My nurse did recommend salting my Water in restaurants. But at home, I'm so thirsty after a few bites that I feel like I must drink. Right now, my plan is to do it gradually. First, get through an entire meal with no water. Then wait 10 minutes, then 20, 30, 45 and 60. Goal is to go the whole hour by my 6-week appointment. I feel like it's the best I can do.

hi pebba

i love drinking with my meals...or i did...i drink right up til i start eating and then wait for up to 1/2 hour after...if i need a sip, i take one..but i know if i drink, it will slide the food right on thru to make room for more...just a habit we got to break..dont sweat it if you have a sip every so often but def try to not drink if you can...doing good so far :)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
