newly banded

Recommended Posts

Well, this is my first posting. I was banded Thursday 4/6/06 after a year of researching. I am now a BMI of 29 (was 31 last week). I am very glad of the questions and answers on this site as I am sure I will have many and at least now I know where to go to find the answer. First question, as I am in 1 week post op, can I have sugar free fudgesicle or will this cause enlargement as well. Is this really a liquid if eaten prpewrly? I have hung tight to broth and Jello and apple juice, but was getting sick of that and needed a little something. Also, should I still have shoulder pain? I am taking tylenol but about every 6 hours it comes back. Nothing too bad just alarming. I am also walking treadmill at lowest .09 (lol) speed about 4 times a day for 5-10 minutes. I appreciate any and all answers, this was a scary but positive step for me. Godd luck and God Bless all of you....

Wow you have a low BMI.

Welcome aboard. Let us know how you are doing. Everything you talked about sounds normal in the beginning. Just hang in there.

Welcome! Nice to meet you! A fudgecicle would be considered full liquids, not Clear Liquids. Sorry! If your doc says clear, stick to clear! Congrats on your band! Sounds like you are doing well & experiencing normal post surgery stuff. For the gas try walking, a heating pad, gas-x & other gas relief products, & if all else fails.............glycerine suppositories. Keep up the good work!

What does your doctor's post-op diet specify you can eat? We can all tell you what's common, or what our doctors made us eat, but we really can't tell you if it's ok for you to eat a given food unless we know what Dr's orders are. ;)

Some have endured the shoulder pain for weeks...

Actually fudgesicles are fine. My next qustion is...I had a terrible bout with gas just now. Today was the first time I used gas X (wondering now if it does the Opposite!). Also, as many here I am sure know, sugar free items cause GAS, why am I instructed to use sugar free Jello, sugar free pudding, etc.....? I really think this has a Major impact on my gas as well.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
