brannewmee 103 Posted December 21, 2012 Hi all. I'm so excited to have started my pre-op diet. I know I will loose wait even before surgery so can't wait to see the new me. As I'm doing my diet some questions have come up. Is regular coffee okay? Can I have soy vanilla instead of skim milk? Soy has more calories, which I need and less Protein which I need? My doctor is Richard Nguyen in San Jose California. Thank you all for the support.
taraepperson 18 Posted December 21, 2012 You can have any milk you want. I used almond milk because it had less calories. Follow that diet to a T and you'll lose a lot pre surgery. I lost 12 lbs! Another good trick is to use you snack, this fruit one, and out bit in the shakes. Yummy!
Instyle98 240 Posted December 21, 2012 I use light soy milk rather than the full calorie stuff. 1 taraepperson reacted to this

Uncle Ted 37 Posted December 22, 2012 I'm at day 5 of 7 and have very few restrictions. In fact, the only one seems to be calories (no more than 870/day). They just want to see that 10 lbs have gone away by Monday. I'm wondering if it's okay to eat an unlimited number of zero-calories foods during this time. I haven't but sure could, stuff like dill pickles and Top Ramen broth. Lots of sodium, though.

Dill pickles is a far cry from my 2 weeks of Optifast shakes I had to deal with for my 2 week preop diet.... Lol
honk 780 Posted December 22, 2012 That salt will make you retain Water like the Hoover Dam! I would not consume a lot of salt before being weighed.

I was also told to eat between 800-1000 calories and 80-100 grams of Protein. My experience has been these last couple days, that the high Protein shakes keep me satisfied. merika0821 7 Posted December 23, 2012 Hi all. My Pre-op diet is strictly liquids for 2 weeks which is so hard. What was I thinking doing this at holiday season but you know everyday it gets easier. Just got to find the will and the strength to keep it up, plus next year holiday season will seem like a breeze!
MiniMi 1,468 Posted December 23, 2012 What helped me through the pre-op part was changing my mind set. It's not a diet to lose weight, it's a diet to ensure success of a surgical procedure. It's the same as when they make you fast before having blood work. My surgeon told me that if my liver was too heavy he couldn't do the procedure laparoscopically and would instead have to open me up! I wasn't having that so I decided to stick to the diet to make it work. I lost 12 lbs, had a successful surgery. But most of all, the change in mindset set my post op success in motion. I didn't ask a lot of questions to make the road easier. I didn't let my self cry over what i couldn't have. I just found out what was necessary to succeed, what foods I could eat, and just stuck to it. I was banded 10/5 and am down 47 lbs with 59 to go. 1 cassieb reacted to this
