what to expect for first fill?

Recommended Posts

You should never vomit from a fill. The doctor will insert a needle into your port and add Fluid to the band. He will then ask you to drink some Water to ensure it passes freely. He may ask you to eat a cracker as well. Depending on your feedback about what you feel in your band, your are either done or they will remove a small amount. Most doctors ask that you go back to liquids for 24 hours before returning to solid food. Some add a second day of soft food or mushies. Then you go back to what you were eating, carefully focusing on small bites and chewing very carefully. Sip liquids slowly don't guzzle. That's it. You should feel extra restriction as you eat after that.

If you go by my experience after a first fill you should expect nothing to change, after the second full, nothing changed and after the 3rd fill, nothing changed. You should never expect to vomit, that can be real bad.

After each fill I have to be on liquids for 24hrs, mushies for 36hrs. There is no pain (or shouldn't be) and you need to continue to chew, take small portions and bites and hope for restriction. I am hoping 4th time is the charm. Good luck.

It felt like a pin prick. If you vomit you need a slight unfill. Fills should never cause you to vomit!!

I didn't vomit. The numbing medicine stung but I didn't feel the fill needle at all. I did feel a neat sensation in my band, like a little hug or squeeze as the Fluid went in. Afterwards I felt a little tight but that's it. Easy!!

I have had two fills and neither time I wanted to vomit. However, I am one of those lucky devils whose port turned just slightly. What does this mean? It means that they have a devil of a time accessing my port to fill it. This entails multiple tries and a little bit of pain. It was nothing my doc did wrong, it's Just the way my body healed. I'm sure it's all worth it, it just doesn't feel like it at the time, lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
