No Beans-Why??

Recommended Posts

HI Everyone

I am newly banded (3 weeks out) and am now allowed mushy foods. My nutritionist gave me a ton of information on what I could eat with regards to this, HOWEVER I admittedly did not read thoroughly and I had some refried Beans (low fat), I did NOT have any issues and it was rather tasty for a change :).

Today I was re reading the nutrionist information again today and it is written specifically DO NOT EAT BEANS. My dad had gastric bypass and this was some mushy food he ate so got the idea from him, also i see several others on forum that eat these as well.

Just wondering if someone else was given this direction and why? I didn't mean not to follow the direction just wasn't careful enough. Thanks for your thoughts.

I was allowed Beans on the mushy phase and the second time I ate them I had the worst pains for 24hrs, I had them for dinner and had to leave work at noon the next day because I was so bloated, gassy and in pain. That was 2 months ago and haven't tried them again since. (mushrooms did the same things for me too - they are also off the list)

Beans are on my good list too. They did suggest throwing them in the blender to make them easier to digest.

Refried Beans were on my list of things to eat post op and my nutritionist encouraged it. I would specifially ask the nutritionist. It may be whole beans because if an enter bean went down with the tough outside may be difficult to get down, but refried beans are mushy so I wouldn't think they would be a problem. I never like refried beans until lapband I learned to like them just for this.

I was told the same.

Basically, the reasoning was that Beans are high in carbs.

There are better sources of Protein that are lower in carbs...ricotta, eggs...

Im not advocating, just sharing what i was told.

In fact, I just ate a few mashed white Beans and cauliflower for dinner!

Again it's just to show how different our drs can be. Always follow your drs guidelines or ask questions if you want to change.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
