Newbie, Surgery the 28th!

Recommended Posts

Hello all, my name is Tiffany I am 23 married to a wonderful man for 5 years now. I started my pre op diet last Friday 12/14/12 and seem to be doing well on it. The Dr's office called me today and let me know my insurance approved the surgery. I am excited and scared at the same time. Any suggestions or tips before or after surgery would be wonderful. I was diagnosed with Pcos when i was 10 and diabetes I'm hoping that this lifestyle will help my Pcos/diabetes and hopefully help us with having children in the future. Thanks for reading!

Yea it's not the best, I had bought the shake mix from my dr and it was horrible! They told me I could drink muscle milk light instead. So I drink 2 of the muscle milk light (chocolate) and its soo easy to drink. Then I get.1 meal of grilled chicken 1 cup of green veggies and 1 cup of fruit. It was very hard at first but now I'm having a hard time just drinking my whole shake! Are you only having liquids? Or do you get 1 meal?

I don't really have any before except to find the Protein Shakes u like. I found one that I actually really like and can tolerate. I use chocolate Protein Powder with ff milk add in a tsp of Peanut Butter and 1 tbsp of sf ff butterscotch pudding powder. It's called a butterfinger shake. I'm a sweets person so this def helps me. I'm post op day 7 and am finishing up my shake today. It def helped the shake go down smoother.

As far as for afterwards.... Make sure u things are within your reach. Have a pillow to be able to hold against your tummy if u have to cough. Invest in a heating pad and liquid ibuprofen for when u don't need the actual pain meds. Be prepared for lots of possible discomfort from gas pain which can occur anywhere. I never took the gas x strips cause the hearing pad did the trick do me but It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have those handy too!

Yw. The pain from the surgery isn't too bad except where the port is which is on the left side. The incision pain isn't bad at all. It's the gas pain that's worse.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
