PCOS and the Lap Band

Recommended Posts

So I have been diagnosed with PCOS for the past 8 years and after many years of exercise and healthy eating I was unable to lose weight, even with medication. I chose Lap Band to assist me with my weight loss journey and to one day have a baby.

However I have been feeling discouraged. I have been slowly gaining back .5lbs for the past two days despite the changes to my diet. (Granted I did mess up a bit over the course of two days but not badly)

So I am still drinking the Protein but am starting to get discouraged. A co-work was so nice enough to come up to me on Friday to say I made a mistake with the Lapland and should have chosen the sleeve or gastric Y because the lap band has too many complications.

I am sorry but all surgery has complications. Me being cut open could result in a complication.

Does anyone else out these have these issues of having PCOS and the fear of the lap band not working for you? ny advice would be helpful.

Thank you

I have PCOD and lost 120 lbs with the lapband. It works but our metabolism doesn't always. Avoid carbs and eat Protein. That's how I did it. And have had a regular period since losing the weight. Good luck!!

My weight loss nurse practitioner suggested a meeting with an oncologist to see if I either have a thyroid problem or PCOS. She feels that I should be losing a lot more weight than I am considering my very conservative diet and my exercise schedule. So I definitely feel your pain about slow weight loss.

I have not been tested but there isn't a doubt in my mind that I have PCOS. It's been 2 months since pre op and post and have lost about 40lbs. Not to shabby. I hope it doesn't slow drastically.. but exercise does seem to help that metabolism going. I eat mostly low carbs and the carbs are do eat are complex carbs.

I just hope all goes well. After a surgery like the lap and with the limited calories you would think I would lose like crazy so to see a 1lb increase just upsets me. I have 800 to 1000 calories a day. I walk and clean a lot but not too much or else I get tired. I can't start jogging until January. I pray I will lose the 70 lbs I need and to have a normal cycle. We shall see only time will tell.

I also have PCOS. I had lap band surgery in July and have lost 48 lbs. I've had days when I was up a lb or 2 then dropped 3 the next day. I believe it's the Pcos and Fluid retention that does that. I know the lap band worked for me and even though I would get discouraged those days, I would try to look at my overall weight loss and know something right is going on. Please don't be discouraged, I was worried about how I was going to lose weight and if it was even going be possible and I'm very happy with my results so far. Don't listen to peoples negative comments. Most of them don't have a clue what they are talking about, especially when it comes to weight loss surgery. This is also a time for healing and recovering. You'll see the weight come off you just have to do the right things and give it time. I've also had a normal cycle since surgery which has never happened!

It's crazy how PCO makes the scale crazy. I'm the same way, I will gain a pound then lose 3. I think the lap band is the best surgery for us because it blocks most carbs which out bodies don't process well. It's the only thing that's ever worked for me and I am 41 years old and do have three children (fertility drugs). But 120 lb weight loss is no joke. I couldn't have done it without the lap band

Thank you guys for sharing your experiences with me. I am going through the ups and downs in weight in the second week. I was worried because I went up 2 but was surprised to find myself down 3 today. I think the lap band was the best decision. It does keep me away from carbs which is bad for persons with PCOS as well as sugar. A high Protein diet is desirable for sure. You guys are awesome and inspire me so much to be hopeful and to keep looking forward. :D

does complex carbs such as whole wheat bread etc bad for ones with pcos also? I know I do have some whole wheat products.

I don't know how far out from surgery you are, but I have PCOS also. I did the same thing you are doing now and a few days later TOM started. Maybe that is what is going on with you? Good luck!

Hey destynee1 here is a link I found about PCOS and carbs from about.com

I hope the information may answer questions you have about carbs and PCOS.

Hey Kris5423, WHat is TOM? In my surgery I am 2 weeks out as of tomorrow. Time goes by fast. I am just happy I can have scrambled eggs!!! :) Yum. I bought some hummus snack packs since I can eat mushies. This weekend I am looking forward to eating my veggies again. I missed them so. Plus I get to make my slow cooker bean Soup for the work week. I still have plenty of Protein Shakes which really get me through the morning and as late afternoon snack but I really missed eating my calories.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
