Esophageal Yeast infection

Recommended Posts

I had lapband surgery on March 13, 2012. I was so excited and got along great until June. On June 6 I had to have my lapband removed due to an esophageal yeast infection. It took three rounds of antifungal to get rid of it. Is there anyone who has experienced this?

Oh no! It sounds very unpleasant. Good luck going forward.

I hope you are able to get back to your weight loss journey soon.

I have the same question. Why couldnt they treat you with the band in place. Seems strange they would take it out just to treat a yeast infection unless there was erosion or something like that.

I am so sorry to hear that you had this problem. Did they tell you what had caused it? I hope you are healed and well.

No Dr. did not tell me what caused it. I did take antifungal w/ band in. I couldn't eat initially and after one round I couldn't even hold down Water. Dr. said it could be unbuckled or it could be taken out. I had been in the week before for an EGD due to pain which is when the yeast infection was found.and was put on the antifungal. The antifungal hadn't worked and when I asked why, Dr. response was, "I'm not a GI specialist, I don't know." and said I could have until the morning to decide, but direct admitted me so I wouldn't dehydrate. I was not getting informed care and knew it wasn't going to get any better as I had been at this process for a year and a half. I opted to have it out and ended up having to take 2 more rounds of antifungal and have Fluid removed from my incision site. I had so many unanswered questions and couldn't get physician to even see me in the hospital. Finally a bariatric nurse came in as I kept insisting that I talk to someone and the nurse pretty much told me my body was rejecting the band and after our talk and seeing that this nurse had had experience in bariatrics for approx. 7 years I made the decision to have it out. I haven't been back to operating physician. But did have to have a ct scan on belly due to enormous protrusion on belly at incision site. Thankfully a new bariatric surgeon had moved into my community that I went to to have the fluid removed from my incision site. I've looked online to try and find information on yeast infections in the esophagus and I haven't found anything yet that relates it to lap band surgery. Emotionally/mentally I've had a difficult time and am still trying to lose weight, but not considering surgery at this point.

I've also had problems with another type of surgery. Keep your attitude positive and don 't give up there's more to come for you .

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
