Insurance question

Recommended Posts

Should I go a head and attempt to get approval from my insurance company even though I won't be able to get my surgery till I get my income taxes in? My insurance is BCBS tx and I heard they were hard to get approved through.

I see no harm in going through with it. Once it is approved, it isn't like you have to do it immediately. Also, many people that do it find they request more information from you or the doctor, etc. so I think getting that process rolling would be in your best interest.

Good luck on getting it approved. :)

1 thing to consider is that regardless of your insurance requirements your doctor may have additional requirements. My insurance didn't require any special pre op diet or waiting period. My surgeon however required that I lose 10 percent body weight. I accomplished that in about 2 and a half months. So moral of the story is you may start your process now but not be cleared for surgery until well after you get your IRS check back. Not trying to be a downer just letting you know how things work for me

Your not downing me. This info has given me more of a push to get it started now. I was curious about him having you lose weight.. right now my BMI is 42.6 if I lose much more will I still qualify for my surgery?

I would go ahead and get the paperwork started.... I was told my BMI had to be over 40 for 5 years so the sooner you go the better :) Best of luck...... I get banded Wednesday :)

Do you have all the specific information from your insurance about whether they cover weight loss surgery and if they do what the requirements are? My understanding is that the doctor normally submit your first way in to the insurance. My BMI was significantly higher so they want you to lose weight to make the surgery easier and also to show that you are committed to the process.

I am not aware of their requirements. Should I call them or allow my Dr. to take care of it? I know they do cover it though.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
