Banded 1 yr and have it removed!!

Recommended Posts

I've been banded for just over a yr and my Dr suggested that I have it removed bcuz my weight loss is too slow and he thinks that I won't loose anymore weight. But I'm getting the vertical sleeve done in return. I just don't feel like going thru the slight irritation for a week. I'm praying it'll be worth it in the end.

I have to ask, why remove a band that's working properly just because your weight loss is slow?

Are you doing your part? Are you sticking to a cup or less of food per meal? Do you count calories? Exercise? Get all your Protein in daily?

How much weight have you lost?

I'm sorry, I'm just trying to make sense of this.

Mis73- I've only lost 30lbs in a yr. Plus I had to have Fluid removed bcuz I had acid reflux so bad. I eat about a cup of food or maybe a little more and the weight is not really coming off. I do exercise, not as much as I should as of lately. Eating less food alone should cause me to loose weight and its not.

Please know that its okay if your doctor thinks the sleeve is best for you. It's not our right to question his judgement. Good luck with the sleeve you will do awesome.

It upsets me to think about people getting banded who did not realize they would need to watch calories, measure postions and work with the band to get into the green zone

I am sorry you have to have the band removed and you feel it didnt work for you. It sounds like you and your Dr have made a good choice based on your personal situation.

The sleeve may not be the answer either. I have a friend who had to move to the sleeve, and has now many of the problems of the by-pass... dumping etc. And is starving all the time. The band will work if you pay attention to what you are eating. It may be easier for the doc to switch you to the band because he may feel you are not band compliant, but personally, I would give the band another honest committed chance before gong through a second surgery.

Be well!

I thought I was in the green zone, I was eating right, much less and exercising. I wasn't getting good results. Then came along the bad acid reflux. That's what triggered everything. The Dr felt the band was not best for me. Both my Drs felt my weight loss was extremely slow.

I understand what you're saying. I was doing good as far as eating with the band. The Dr that's removing it, is not the original Dr that put it in. He probably would've recommended the sleeve from the beginning. He said most people that get the band, at some point get it removed. He said he does more removals than installing them. Seems crazy right.

Considering my Dr has done thousands of bands and very few removals... yes that does sound crazy.

IMHO, I think I'd get a second opinion before going under the knife again, if it was me.

Both my Drs thought the band wasn't really helping me like it should. I have Kaiser so there are only a few Drs that perform the surgery.

PLEASE PLEASE reseach the sleeve FULLY before you go under the knife again. I have a band, my dad had the sleeve. I hhave had my band for almost a year and have lost 75lbs. I feel like I'm losing slow, but when I look at the big picture, I'm happy with where I'm at. BUT, my dad had the sleeve in May of this year, has had complication after complication resulting in MILLIONS of dollars of hospital bills (He has been in the hospital 4 times due to complications, one time was over 4 months in there! and just got re-admitted again 2 days ago, and was told he will be in there until after New Years!) I'm not going to bad mouth the sleeve, but I just hope and pray that you completely and totally research it before you go under the knife again. Take the "rare complications" they tell you about seriously, because once you have it done, there is NO GOING BACK!!! If I could turn back time, I would NEVER allow my dad to get the sleeve. I fear this is going to kill him from all the complications...and hes still not in the clear yet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
