Not as much support as i thought

Recommended Posts

I think my surgeon is good but the " after care" has been almost non existent. No one has called or anything. I got 1 call from a nurse the day after surgery. Now 6 weeks post op I get my 1st fill tomorrow. I called them to ask if there was any diet restrictions tomorrow and they said they didn't think so. Lol. Well I don't know. That's why I called!

HI

If you can try and get to a support group.

I hearing from so many people that clinics are not offering adequate follow up support.

Keep after your clinic with your questions.

Sorry to hear you are frustrated. Perhaps the person you spoke with on the phone wasn't a medical staff member.

Does your doctor's office have a nutritionist on staff? Mine does and she is available for me to talk to at any of my visits. If there isn't one, I would urge you to see one that specializes in the band to help set up a plan for you.

Ask your dr. tomorrow about the diet. He has to know. Typically, it is liquids or mushies for a day or two and then gradually to solids.

My doctor's office has been wonderful but I think it is normal for you not to hear from them. I only talk to them at my visits.

If you have any questions after tomorrow and still don't get answers ask away at our experiences. I am saddened by how many doctors don't educate their patients and think that makes all the difference in the world of success.

Good luck to you!

I only ever hear from my surgeon's office if they need to change an appointment or something like that.

What were you expecting to hear from them? It would be good for you to explain your expectations next time you are there.

Best wishes.

Other than right after surgery I never received a call either.... But I was armed with a packet of what to eat and a nutrition plan to follow....when you go to your next appointment why not mention the call to the dr about noone at the office telling you what you should be eating then take notes when he tells you....

All good advice. I just was under the impression that with the surgery I also got all the " benefits" of solutions weight loss center. Maybe I'm being a baby but I guess I don't know what those benefits are. Lol. They really seemed caring & wanted to help pre op but I guess I thought they'd check on me or something. Lol.

I have a great office, but did not expect any calls. They are available whenever I need them.

You have received great feedback. Make sure you get connected with a NUT. That is where I get most of my support.

My doctor's office had me watch a couple of videos, and gave me a lot of handouts. It was up to me to read the extensive info they gave me pre-surgery. I've always known they were there if I needed them, but they also expected me to educate myself with the info they gave me.

I'm 11 days post-op and returned to work today (I could have gone back at full steam on day 7, but had company so I waited until today). My doctor's office has been great. They called on a couple of occasions post-op so far to check on me. I had a post-op office visit 7 days out. I am looking forward to getting into a support group to share in person with others as I can be a little dense about the instructions. I am grateful for this website. Now that we have our bands, it's like other health matters...it's important that we take charge of our well being and be assertive! Hang in there and keep asking until you get the answers you need.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
