JellyBean 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Hi, First let me say I know it was a dumb thing to do. But I am a week post -op and everything has been fine. I'd been doing Clear liquids for a week and been having no problems. Although, I am pretty hungry and today I was looking forward to eating yogurt as an approved added food. Like a dummy I read somewhere on this site that about a soft boiled egg and I thought, well maybe that might be a nice thing to have, since I am lactose intolerant. I even food proccessed it so it was liquid like egg beaters, but of course it didn't seem warm enough for me so I microwaved it! Brilliant huh? Well that of course made it harder so it was back to the food processor to reliquefy it. I had a few bites of this now mousse like substance and I regret it. I got the golf ball feeling right away, and started sweating. But, I regained my wits and heard that I shouldn't eat or drink anything. I just walked around and waited and waited. I called the Dr. after 2 1 /2 hours he said that I should walk around and not eat or drink anything. It's now been 7 hours I am not in pain and not sweating but the feeling like its still right there in my chest persists. I am now getting thirsty. What should I do? I am afraid to call my Doc again in case it just goes down. I read through and heard about the meat tenderizer thing, but waiting to see if it will just go down. Has anyone had anything stuck for a really long time without sliming or PBing? Will I have to go somewhere to get the offending few bites out? Its the weekend of course, now and I'm just scared. I don't need a lecture, b/c I know better now and I'm so soon after surgery my doc does not want me to PB b/c band could slip. Sorry I am so long winded, I think I'll be okay but I need reassurance and other bandster's experience. Thanks...
Wheetsin 714 Posted April 8, 2006 I had food stuck about 3 days post-op. It did not stay stuck for long because I PBed it up after about 45 minutes. Sorry I can't help more. Does it feel like maybe you're just sore from having something stuck, or does it definitely feel like it's still there? Maybe a sip of cold Water, so you can tell whether or not it goes through? (you'll feel the cold in your stomach) I don't know... wait for others who've maybe been stuck for hours & hours that might have some different advice. RavensRiches 0 Posted April 8, 2006 I'm sorry I laughed at your egg story but, as they say, misery loves company. We'll get the hang of this and before you know it, we'll be skinny little rock stars!
the best me 6 Posted April 8, 2006 JellyBean, try sipping (and I do mean sipping the smallest amount humanly possible) something warm. Even just warm Water. For me, just that little added bit of moisture helps slip things along. Hands over head...stretch out the diaphragm. Sip a tad bit more. You might feel it pass...or just feel the discomfort stop. Success! Good luck...keep us posted.
Jantique 0 Posted April 8, 2006 I'm 2 weeks post op. Last night i tried canned salmon and a piece must have just hung there at the top of the band, same golf ball feeling. So I quit eating, started sipping and moving around, and I think it's gone. But the pain continued, so a couple hours ago I took 2 tsps of the anti-inflamatory that I was given for post-op -- Zithromax. Now the pain has gone away! So maybe we both inflamed our stomach linings.
the best me 6 Posted April 8, 2006 Next comes my third plug for the night for Aloe Vera juice. Soothing and healing stuff.
GeezerSue 7 Posted April 8, 2006 #1--I have never tried this, but there are those who swear by papaya enzymes. If you try it, just take a little. #2--Eggs can be horrid, because they never really dissolve like other foods, they just chew into smaller pieces. #3--When THIS resolves, you'll probably want to do another two or three days on liquids, because the stoma is probably swelling a little in this situation, and stuff that went down yesterday may not tomorrow. (You didn't ask, but I'd probably cough a few times...not too far from the bathroom...and see if I could dislodge it just enough.)
Jantique 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Thanks, Kathy, I searched your posts, and I'll head to the stomach remedies section of Walmart tomorrow. And I'll wait a while before trying canned fish again! Back to Soups, Crystal Light and Protein drinks again. Jantique
JellyBean 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Thank you all for your great advice after 10 pm (nine hours later) I took in some tiny sips of Water, then I tried warm Water with the meat tenderizer, then I must have walked about two miles inside my 1 bedroom apt.! Then I tried to flap my arms like a chicken and stretch. :clap2: Finally, I just went to bed and prayed to St. Jude and the Virgen Mary to let it resolve before the night is out. (Okay so I'm dramatic, but I had visions of having this golf ball feeling forever, and ruining my band). At 3 am I think I felt like it was going to be okay, at least the tightness in my chest went away. I'm now on liquids for a few more days until I feel 100%. I'm going to get aloe vera juice to heal up some of the irritation. Thanks again for those who replied, I feel so much camraderie from this site and it's okay to laugh at my story, in retrospect it is funny, but whew I'm glad its over! :high5:
DonnaB 3 Posted April 8, 2006 Hi Jellybean, I'm glad you're feeling better. I'm 4 weeks and 4 days post-op and I just tried scrambled egg today. Even though I chewed and chewed, the first bite just sat in my chest like a hot, throbbing rock. Fortunately I'm carefully following the band rules and I didn't take a second bite. I had to walk around for a couple of minutes until the feeling passed. I ate a tiny bite of crisp bacon and it went down fine, so I tried another, smaller bite of egg and chewed, chewed, chewed and swallowed the bite a little bit at a time. It went fine after that and I was able to eat the rest of my Breakfast with no problems. Sorry to hear about your experience. This is a completely new way of eating and old habits are hard to break - trial and error is the only way we'll figure it out. That and the support of our friends! I've heard that a small sip of pineapple juice will help with a food stick. I haven't tried it myself but I've got a few little cans for 'just-in-case!' Good luck to you. Carlene 12 Posted April 9, 2006 My very first "stuck" food was scrambled eggs. But I'm a slow learner, so I tried them twice more over the course of about six months. They stuck every single time. I have officially given up eggs, by the way. A really bad episode of plugged stoma can irritate your band's plumbing and cause swelling and discomfort for DAYS if you don't make the proper sacrifices to the band goddess. A properly restricted band will kick your ass. Don't fight with your band...you will not win.
