first doctors appointment

Recommended Posts

I had my first appointment yesterday with my surgeon and needless to say I left there confused and full of questions. He was almost 2 hours late and didn't even take 5 minutes to review my chart, which I wouldn't have minded seeing as I was sitting there for that long anyway. He then goes on to tell me that the Lap Band is not reliable, you don't lose as much weight as bypass, and they are being phased out.

Has anyone else heard this information?? I'm so confused on what I want to do. On the one hand it would be great to not have to get poked with a needed every time I start getting "more hungry", but on the other hand there's more complications involved with the bypss (right?).

I've always heard the opposite. Bypass is more of a risk and you are more likely to gain back. The thing about the lap band is its completely reversible.

I'd research some sites, and maybe YouTube. Also call another surgeon and get their opinion.

I've never heard of It being phased out tho.. That's weird. Let me know if u hear that again

Every surgery is a risk & the Bypass has changed as far as being successful since years ago. I work in a doctors office & let me tell you the bypass has come a long way.

Sounds like you may need to find a new doctor. Mine loves the band and has been putting them in for 10 years.

Bypass & Band both you can gain it back. It's not what you have done its that the person in general have to be ready for the change & follow Doctors orders on order to be the Successful You.

I called another dr's office and spoke with the nurse there and she even said that bypass is more reliable than the band. She said from her experience working in that office she has seen countless patients come in and get the band, just to have it removed from complications (port infections, rejection) and most of them get the bypass. I'll save myself the hassle and just get the bypass lol.

Suit yourself but my sister had bypass at 270 and now weighs 400. I work with surgeons and they make much more $ with bypass. If you stay on this forum or take time to read success stories you will see that band is less invasive and 1 of 20 people have complications. My advice is to go to a lap band and bypass seminar and then decide! Also check out how many people with bypass are getting banded. I wonder why? Don't ever make such decisions based on the opinion of one or two people. Get informed!

Also, bypass patients have much trouble with Vitamin an mineral absorption! You drop the weight faster... Too fast which can be very dangerous!

And leave tons of sagging skin, which u will need to pay to have removed because it is then a cosmetic thing, not a medical issue! I would most definitely go to a band seminar, they discuss all 3 options, band, bypass, and sleve. They show you statistics and really leave u informed of all 3

I already did the information session as a requirement before I could even see the doctor. I will be going to a support group at the end of the month. I have plenty of time to make up my mind on which one I want to get.

I would call some other surgeons office to get fully informed. It seems as if this surgeons office is very one way sided . An informational seminar will also have their opinions attached to it.

Good luck to u! I'm sure you'll choose what's best for u!

First things first I've been working with Bariatric Surgeons since 1997 first in NYC now in upstate NY so my knowledge is here about all options. I've read, done seminars & the whole nine yards. I've been on this site way prior before I had my surgery (banded in 2010) but due to patient confidentially I have joined multiple times. I am not up or down playing either procedure Band or Bypass. My comment was that the Bypass has come a long way since the beginning. I see patients everyday & know their ups & downs. Weight loss surgery is a big step & of course we've all read the bad & great success stories. I wish all the best of luck & much success with their journeys.

Do what is right for you & your health situation. Every procedure has its goods

& Bad. Just do your research sit with your PCP & Bariatric Providers & see what benefits you. Good luck to you in whatever you decide.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
