Day 1 post op question

Recommended Posts

So today I got banded and have been trying to drink Water and take my pain meds but each time I do I throw up. I called the Dr. Office and they assure me that it's normal but if it persists tomorrow to call them. Has anyone had any problems with vomiting after surgery?

I'm still pre-op, so no experience with that, but my surgeon and nurse told me that they want to make sure I am not vomiting, as it can be hard on my healing stomach. They emphasized that, when I do come out of surgery, if I do feel nausea, I should let them know right away so they can give me something for it so that I don't vomit.

That is not normal. Did they give you your pain mess in liquid form? That's important. Also you have to sip, very small. My doctor told me that we wanted NO vomiting. Persistent vomiting can cause the band to slip.

Yes, did they give you pain meds in liquid form? If not, ask for it. Also, it is common after surgery for some and many people say their doc gave them anti-nausea med that helped. As someone earlier mentioned, make sure you are sipping your Water now. If you try to take big sips or gulps it will come back up as you are still very swollen inside. Definitely follow the doc's advice though to call if it persists.

The doctor did give me something for nausea but it didn't help. I think it's because of the anesthesia they gave me. My pain pills as well as other medication is in liquid form. I haven't felt the need to vomit today. Which is great. You are right vomiting is not good for the bad but I am sure I will be ok, I see the doctor again in 2 weeks. I just have to get use to drinking the nasty meds.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
