Starting Pre-Op diet tomorrow Anyone Else

Recommended Posts

I am sure your doctor knows what he/she are doing and have you on a plan that they have seen work. If you dont trust your doctor you might find another. Your diet is acutally a lot easier then what I have seen other people on lately. A lot of people are on just liquids which is the hardest. Best of luck!

What do you mean by you havent had any of the symptoms people have ?

I have not had any hunger problems or headaches. In fact, I have found it a little difficult to drink and eat all the calorie, Protein, and Water they want me to have each day.

My surgery is Tuesday Dec. 11th and I'm on day 13 of a high Protein low carb diet, it's been rough but worth it. I've been hungry the whole time but try to keep occupied with other things so I don't think about being hungry. Drink lots of Water that seems to help with the hunger.

I'm a little nervous about the surgery but can't wait to start a new way of living.

Good luck with your surgery!

I am on a high protine preop diet that is intended to help deplete the liver of its glycogen stores prior to the operation to help shrink the liver. It consist of 1000 calories a day, 100 grams of Protein a day, and 2 quarts of Water. They have me drinking five 8oz bottles of Slimfast high Protein drinks and a combination of hardboiled eggs, yogurt, and cottage cheese to equal 100 grams of Protein. That is the diet they have me on right up to my surgery. Is anyone else on that type of prep diet? It doesent sound like it and I havent had any of the symptoms people have described in here during thier preop prep.

Dee, I have not heard of that diet but I am sure your Dr. knows what they are doing. When is you surgery scheduled for?

I was originally scheduled earlier but it got pushed out. So I have almost a wee on the pre op diet already. I had horrible headaches he first two days. I know mine were not caffeine withdrawal. I have been caffeine free for two months.

I am on day 3 and the headaches are gone today. I am still hungry but not as bad as yesterday. It really helps to check in with all of you to see how it is going.

Thanks for all of your notes!

I had my pre-op appointment yesterday and my surgery date was changed to 12/31. I told the doctor that my preop and surgery date was given to me only late last week, so I was unable to start the diet 14 days prior to surgery so he changed the date. The good thing though is that after my appointment I think I'm starting to get my motivation back to go forward with the surgery and all that goes with it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
