Anyone Can Share The Experience With The Lap Band ?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, Can someone please help me, im fairly new to this site.

I am 24 years old, have had my Gallbladder removed last year and diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome). Which makes you gain a lot of weight and on top of that its verrry difficult to get pregnant. i have tried dieting but that doesnt last long i always loose the weight but gain double of what i had lost. Ever since my gallbladder surgery i have gained a lot more. I have always been on the heavier side but not as much. Currently i am 220 pounds and my height is 5'1. I have doctors appointment on the 5th for a consultation for the lap band. I am kind of scared bc i have heard a lot of negative things.

Can someone please give me advise? What has been your experience like?

Hi Juliet

I was 21 when I was banded. I have had my ups and downs. I did a lot of research before deciding to get the op. I guess I was lucky as I had my mum, uncle and great aunt who i could talk to as they had all had banding too. Though I don't have the other health problems that you do, so unfortunantely cannot comment on that part of it, I do not regret getting banded. I have been overweight my whole life and I think that for me this was the way to go. one thing I was told was to remember that while you hear all the bad things about banding you rarely hear the good things and the good things outweigh the bad. but I guess its a personal choice.

Good luck in your decision

sorry I couldn't help more

Amy

I had gallblader surgery in Aug of 2011 and gained weight afterward. In June 2012 I had lapband, I was at 244 lbs at surgery - my highest weight was 247. Now a little more than 5 months out I am down 45 lbs (199). I feel great - my asthma is almost not there anymore. I can walk and run- more energy - sleep better. Clothing wise I was wearing a 20/22 pant and a 1-2X top - now I wearing 14/16 pants and a size L-XL top.

I haven't had any problems that others told me about before I had surgery. I have been stuck a few times, but that was my fault (not chewing well enough). Having a band is a learning experience.

Each person is different and reacts to the band in a different way. If you are just thinking about getting a band- go to seminars- choose a surgeon you like and are comfortable with and talk through it with them. My surgeon and his group are amazing and have been 100% supportive and wonderful with answering my "dumb" questions.
