Recommended Posts

Well this is my only second time posting. My preop diet begins next Monday. My doctor requires the sugar busters diet. Any hints on some good things to eat?

Welcome! I'm on my preop "diet" and doing well so far. When i weighed yesterday I had lost 8 lbs. I am having surgery this Thursday December 6. I am very excited. Getting a little nervous. But I know it will be fine. I have been going by my instructions for the Protein Shakes. But my favorite snack is dill pickles! They are allowed for me so it's almost like a treat for me!

Hmm, I like dill pickles. I need to re-read my info & see if I can have those, lol! They also make "Pickle Pops" popsicles, need to see if those are SF, LOL. Just the thought of them sort of turned my stomach before, but now (day 4 pre-op diet), I'm thinking they don't sound too bad. :D

I have a shake for Breakfast, a shake for lunch, then 3-4oz lean meat Protein, 1C green veggies (excluding peas - anyone know why??) and 1C allowed fruit if I'm still hungry. I can have SF popsicles, SF Jello, Water, tea, coffee, broth. No specifics on salt intake, other than "try to make good choices".

It's so interesting that these doctors have so many different directions for the patients!

It is interesting the differences in doc plans. I'm on day 6 and I've lost a little over 8lbs. My biggest complaint is I get so tired. I am retired so thank goodness I don't have to go to work, but who knows that just maybe energizing. I keep going over what I'm to eat after.....still can't believe that it is Dec. My motto is "I'M IN IT TO WIN IT"!!!! Effie

I had to do a bit of research because that "no peas" rule was making me twitchy. I don't even like peas all that much, but when someone writes, "NO PEAS" on something, I want to know why.

I found a couple of unverified, yet plausible answers. Apparently peas are very starchy (like potatoes) and convert to sugar at a fairly rapid rate. Other veggies to avoid for this reason are: potatoes (duh), corn and lima Beans. The other answer is ~ GaS. Peas are high in Fiber and can give you a gassy, bloated feeling, which must be expelled from the body in the most unattractive way.

So there you have it. No peas, please! :)

The sugar busters diet is like the Atkins diet but doesn't use the word Atkins in it. Haha!! Watch out Protein here I come!!!

I was told no peas, corn or potatoes. Everything else was fair game. On the veggie front, I only ended up eating broccoli, cauliflower, and collard greens for my 2 weeks pre-op.

I was told by my doc that Clear Liquids only for preop! No food cause the liver needs to shrink before surgery! Boy, I wish I could eat at least a pickle! I was told that if you don't lose weight they may postpone the surgery!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
