Newly Banded 11/26 Lots Of Hunger Pains

Recommended Posts

I was newly banded in Tuesday. So 4 days ago and I am starving! My stomach is growling, it hurts! I am eating sugar free Jello & popsicles and drinking Clear Liquids only. I keep having the painful burps with every sip. And continue to get nauseated every day. Help!

Are you on pai meds? The pain meds can cause nausea. I never took any pain meds so never had nausea.

Yes but not too often. I am on anti nausea meds for that. Just not coping well with food or lack of food

this is the hardest part for most of us. I know it wont help to much but it will pass and life on the other side is so much better then you can imagine. Soup broth was the best for me and hot Water or tea helps the hungry and feels good.

Thank you and it does help to know I'm not alone. I hear so many say they were never hungry and wonder why am I. It's painful and discouraging. You helped my sanity.

I was banded on the 27th. This two weeks of clear liquids is definitly going to be hard. I keep telling myself that I should be able to live off body fat for 2 months. Lol. Good luck to all of us

Some of what you feel may be gas pains... the anesthetic and pain pills can cause that. Keep sipping, and it should get better soon. Some say a heating pad helps.

I was banded on 11/16. Been feeling a little discouraged. The last few days I have been starving! Truly my stomach is growling...I'm still drinking the Protein Shakes. I'm eating mushy food now. My first fill is on the 7th. I weighed myself Thursday and had gained 3 pounds. Having a pity party I know...but wondering was it worth it? Know it hasn't been a month yet, but I was doing so well before. Had lost 24 pounds. Now I've gained 3. :(

I feel your pain :( . I too was banded on 11/27 and due to the swelling really wasn't hungry until saturday and then it was overwhelming! I got really cranky with my hubby for making his dinner and making me smell it, I made him eat it upstairs-LOL. This forum is so helpful because it sounds like everyone is hungry during this phase and we just have to bite the bullet. We WILL get thru this and be better for it. I can't wait until mushies phase this weekend tho!! FIll is suppose to be 6 weeks from surgery date. Best of luck to you and everyone getting through this starvation phase.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
