Had my postop with my surgeon today. Everything looks good but he said something that concerned me. He asked if I was getting in my 64 grams of Protein daily and I said after the first week it hasn't been a problem, that I can get in closer to 9-95 grams daily (I track everything on MFP). He said he thought that was too much protein which confused me. I assumed if I had extra calories after I hit 64 grams of protein it was better to still get more protein instead of fats and carbs. My surgeon seemed to think its hard to lose weight eating 1000 calories a day and suggested I cut back to 800 cals a day.

Has anyone received similar advice? How many grams of protein are you getting daily? I will consult my nutritionist but just wondered if anyone had a similar experience.

Unfortunately, you'll find every doctor seems to have their own idea what works. Some do low carb, some don't restrict carbs, some do low calorie and other are more generous.

I eat between 1000-1200 calories a day and aim for a minimum of 60g of Protein per day. I find if I eat less than 1000 calories a day, my weight loss actually slows down.

Ultimately you have to do what's best for you and works best with your body. My major issue with surgeons giving identical food plans to all their patients is the fact we're all different and have different needs. What works for one person may not work for another at all and vice versa.

Definitely talk to the nutritionist and see what she says.

Best wishes to you.

I was told to get around 800 calories a day as well and have been losing weight very regularly so far. It just depends on the person really.

Good morning all! It's Saturday - hooray. So here's the thing, I haven't had a fill yet - am just 22 days out - and can still barely finish my unjury Protein shake in a.m. I have a yoghurt four hours later, and then another four hours latereither tuna or chicken salad (the four spoonfuls I can manage to get down before I'm full. dinner is turkey chili - one cup or something similar. Still feel as if I'm not getting enough Protein and where would I fit in veggies, fruits, carbs?

I'd be grateful for ideas - am getting filled next Friday - yikes!

Have a wonderful day everybody!

Are you doing a full 8 oz shake in the mornings?

Yes. shake every morning. But I read here somewhere that we should eat calories rather than drinking them. A little confusing.

Yeah, that's what my doctor says! I bought the unflavored Unjury and I just toss a scoop in just about anything I eat (soup, potatoes, tea, cream of wheat, crystal light etc.) so it's easy for me to get my Protein in that way! I was on shakes prior to surgery, so after the surgery I was tired if them and had to find another way. Plus, adding protein to actual food is more filling that just a drink, which goes straight through your band. It keeps you fuller for longer!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
