Animal Protein Only?

Recommended Posts

My doctor says my diet is to eat just animal Protein nothing else to lose weight. He said this is what my patients have had success with over the years. I find it odd that I should be ONLY be eating animal protein to lose weight.

Anyone done this before? Or know if it? First time I'm hearing this.

Your doc is a low carb guy! Atkins begins his first 2 weeks with only 15-30 grams of carb per day. I doubt your doc would leave you on nothing but Protein for very long because even though carbs are not good for people who are intolerant of them, the body still needs some carbs. If you wanted to add a little carb to that diet of his, I would add only veggies that have few carbs, no fruits. You can Google the list, but briefly it would be you staying away from onions, winter squash, starchy veggies like corn, peas, carrots. My veggie choices would be cukes, only a little Tomato, cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, green Beans. I assume this diet is either right before or right after surgery? If it's after, then don't eat the asparagus or broccoli unless cooked mushy. Hope this helps!

I am not sure what he means by only eat animal Protein? you are going to need vegetables and other nutrients from food besides animal Protein. I would imagine he is saying those who eat animal protein are most successful because unlike Protein shakes, it takes longer to digest and sits longer in your stoma, so you will feel full longer. But unlike vegetarian protein options (tofu, quinoa) animal products have fewer carbs. So i would suggest eating what you like, but definitely try to minimize your carbs. I have had the best luck losing weight when I around 100 g of carbs a day. really no matter the calorie intake for me (I can range from 1,200 to 2,500 in a day and still lose weight if i'm watching my carbs).

Also, animal products will have more diverse Proteins, so you will have more of what your body is craving as nutrients satisfied. if you would rather get Proteins from peanuts or vegetarian sources, just look at the carbs and account for them in the rest of your food choices, and make sure you are looking up how to get all the essential amino acids in your diet so you don't have hunger from not getting the right nutrients.

Sounds a bit extreme to me, but you can always call and ask HIM why!

I would ask him for a specific list of what your should, eat and for how long. Then ask him how he feels about vegetables and fruit.< /p>

He said if I wanna lose weight I gotta forget about those things. Even if I eat only healthy food I'm not gonna lose weight. I don't know lol doesn't make sense to me.

Umm...I don't mean this to sound snarky, and I know he's a doctor, but is he really that clueless? That's a bit scary.

It's basic math- if you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight regardless if what you're consuming is animal Protein or not.

Maybe he is clueless. He is basing this off of successful patients.

Protein can come from many forms. I think he just means to get majority of your protein from meat/fish. He wants you to eat less veggies because they are starchie and they will also take up a lot of room and reduce protein intake.

Not majority, all of it. Anyway I'm going to see him again in 2 weeks and see what happens.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
