So Confused

Recommended Posts

Ok so I went to my pcp today to have him write me a letter of rec. so I can send it to the attorney to help my case. What I'm confused with is I was in this mind set where I wanted a band, having more than half of your stomach taken out scares me and the bypass isn't happening god gave me all the plumbing in there and I plan on keeping it that way.

So when I was telling him he really didn't say much besides " your not getting younger and your not getting any lighter". He didn't give me much to go by. I asked him what he thought and he said that I should do the sleeve. I know I need to keep my options open and that if I'm banded I can always get a sleeve if I need to but I can't go sleeve to band.

Now I'm super confused. I know it's just his opinion but I just don't know.

Doctors are real people too. They have their favorites. Ford, Chevy, Toyota?? Lapband, sleeve, bypass? In his practice maybe he's had a couple of bands not go well and has one or more sleeves that worked out well. Too bad he's not a better communicator?? He could tell you why he believes the way he does.

You are right about if the band doesn't work, you can go to sleeve, but can't go the other way!

That's why I choose the band to keep all my parts in tact and if the band doesn't work, we'll reconsider. I wanted to start with the least invasive first.

I suggest you research them both until you are comfortable with your decision. It's your choice!

The band is not permanent, the sleeve is. Not that any of us want to get rid of our bands, but things that can't be reveresed scare me. I don't like the thought of taking portions of my body out. I'm sorry your doctor wasn't more supportive to you. YOu also have to remember he is a PCP and not a bariatric dr. He doesnt' have that much background about it all and is likely throwing more of his opinions in there then he medical knowledge??

Thank you for all your help. I am so excite for the 6th I have a class and will be getting my paper work ready for the attorney. It's kinda like Christmas. I just am looking forward to being healthy. I know the band is only a tool to help me but I'm still very excited

I hope you stick around here and learn all you can. Yes, it is only a tool the needs a lot of work from it's owner.

Best wishes on your journey!

I was sometimes frustrated that no one, including my surgeon, came out and just said "do this" or "do that" Band vs. sleeve vs. bypass. They all pretty much left it up to me.

But I understand now why they did this. There is no right or wrong answer for any individual. It is a personal choice and a personal comfort level with one over the other.

I agree with previous posters on this. I went band figuring I would do the least intrusive, and keep the sleeve/bypass as an option if the band didn't work.

My band slipped, but I attribute it to things that I did to cause it (being too tight, not handling the issue sooner). But I am still going back to the band as soon as my insurance company gives me the ok to have it put back in.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
