How Soon After Surgery Did You Return To The Gym?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

How quickly did you guys return to the gym post-surgery? My doc says 6 weeks, but I am 3 weeks out and itching to get back to real working out (can you tell i am impatient) beyond walking/hiking. Any one go back sooner than 6 wks?

thanks all!

PS - dont worry, I listen to my doctor, just curious if others went back sooner...

Don't rush it! Just remember that you have multiple stitches in multiple locations. You don't want to rush it and then end up hurting yourself.

Your body needs the time to heal and then you can return with GUSTO!

Listen to your doctor.

I went back today - 6 weeks after my surgery.

I work with a personal trainer and my dr. wanted me to wait 6 weeks before doing any core exercises. I was soooooo happy to get back to the gym.

Cant believe how much I missed working out!

6 weeks. I felt great after surgery and even asked at my 1 week post op appt. They told me '6 weeks, we don't want you to pop a stitch'. That phrase 'pop a stitch' kept me walking for 6 weeks. You still have lots of healing to do inside.

I started walking on treadmill about 2 weeks after surgery. No weight lifting or abs, etc for 1 month.

Walking or seated biking only 4 weeks.

Returning to the gym would indicate that I have ever stepped foot in one.... Which at 377 lbs I had not. ;) I was allowed to walk right away but told not to do anything more strenuous until my 2 month post op visit.

I have been walking since about 1 week and was told by the clinic/doctor 4-6 weeks "listen to your body" so I am now doing a little Zumba along with walking just not going so crazy and listening to my body

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
