I'm A Self Pay And I Think I Need More Pre-Op Info

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I've made my appointment (12/10) for surgery but somehow feel like I need more info. I'm calling to speak with the nutritionist tomorrow but so far all I've been told is that 3-4 days before surgery I should be on a liquid diet. After surgery? All I have is the LapBand info packet.

Any suggestions or websites I should visit?

Thanks for any help you can give!!

Beth

You do! See this post: http://www.lapbandtalk.com/topic/160580-the-big-book-on-the-lap-band-everything-you-need-to-know-to-lose-weight-and-live-well-with-the-adjustable-gastric-band/

and I would suggest a doctor which has a better support system. Mine has nutritionist, psychologist, support groups, book recommendations etc. Also search for Jean McMillan on this forum and buy her book, well worth it. I would not get surgery without being better informed.

You're in the right place here, plus there's a book Bandwagon written by our very own Jean McMillian, a must read for all.

Ask any questions you may have and they'll get answered.

Glad you're trying to educate yourself before surgery. I always say knowledge equals success.

Best wishes on your journey!

I would speak to your surgeon's office. Be blunt- you are having surgery and you need clear cut directions and guidance. Ask them:

-The pre-op liquid diet- exactly what should I be drinking? What is my goal?

-Post op, exactly what are the diet phases I should follow? How long is each phase?

Do not let them give you a half answer or blow you off. The luxury of being self pay is, if they're not willing to thoroughly do their job then you can fire them and hire a more competent surgeon.

The nutritionist will help you a lot, btw. I'm really glad you're seeking one out.

Best wishes to you.

Like Mis says, talk with Dr&staff, but continue to educate yourself. My nutritionists said that most ppl only retain 30% of whats being told. You are your best advocate!

Thanks everyone!!

My first call of action tomorrow is to call the nutritionist. Then, I'm getting the books. I've been through so many diets that I refuse to fail this time.

I am self pay to but my surgeon has alot of requirements I had to do before I could get a date. I to meet with him, then the next appointment was with his nurse and she went over all the steps, then to a psychologist, next a meeting with the nutritionist, then a group meeting, then my family physician, back to see his nurse, another meeting with the nutritionist and finally to see my surgeon whew what a journey. Dec 6th is my date I have been on a Liquid Protein diet for 7 days now I started a few days early so I could adjust to the change on a weekend.... It has been really easy I'm on 800 calories and have lost 12 lbs so far!

I was also a self pay. My dr put me thru the same steps as a insurance pay. I question why the rules would be different.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
