What is plication? I have seen it mentioned a lot on here and my doctor has never mentioned this. Can anyone explain?

Plication is an add on procedure that mimics the gastric sleeve. The large portion of the stomach is folded in on itself and stitched in place. Nothing is cut away. Many people experience similar results as gastric sleeve, and faster weigh loss. Talk to your doctor to see if he does it. I have the plication and have been very happy with it.

I just don't understand why do both?

The plication can give you added assurance or help in losing your weight. Some people who have the plication never need a fill or need very few fills to be successful with there weight loss. This procudure miminics the gastric sleeve like Grammy stated but without actually having to have half your stomach removed. People who have this proceure generally lose all there weight, with lap band alone the statistics only state about 50/60% total weight loss. Losing to a healthy BMI and normal body weight with lap band alone is not typical without a lot of hard work.

Also, plication is still in the "study phase" in the U.S., so not every doctor is approved to do it. One of the reasons for doing both is that in this study phase, plication is not approved as a stand-alone weight loss surgery.

I was just plicated on the 15th of this month when my surgeon had to go back in and redo my slipped band. I'm still on the full liquid diet, so I haven't really noticed much difference than just being banded alone, but I hope once I graduate to normal food I'll be able to tell a difference.

Overall, I just feel fantastic and am so happy I was able to get the plication, even if it did require another surgery!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
