Is Soda Bad Once In A While?

Recommended Posts

I am able to have one cup of coffee. As someone stated earlier with soda it is more about the carbonation and the sugar (if drinking regular soda).

Ok, I'm a bad girl. There are 2 things I did not give up. Ranch and soda. Ranch I use very sparingly and I went to light, but it's def still in my fridge. I only drink diet Pepsi and I sip it, also I do not drink it through a straw. I don't drink nearly as much as I used to, but probably a half a can every couple of days. Also, did not start drinking it again until about 6 months after surgery. It's a personal choice, but of course, your doctors opinion is always the most important. I don't personally know anyone who has ever had a problem drinking soda. It's always "I heard about this girl...", but it's never someone that anyone has known directly. Even my doctor, after doing thousands of these surgeries, has never personally had a patient who has experienced this problem. He doesn't suggest it and to him it's more about the liquid calories, but it's not off limits.

I admit to have fallen off the wagon well.. completely but including carbonated drinks. Beer and diet soda. I knew it might stretch the pouch- but i was telling myself my band was loose enough that wouldn't happen. I am glad a few months ago I said- no more carbonation, you are not suppossed to have it. Didn't realize it could cause a slip- will never drink it again. I am lucky I had no problems, although I supposse my pouch may be stretched.

Soda was hard for me as well, I just don't think it's worth the risk.. and it is soo bad for you.. INCLUDING Diet soda. I helped out my bf since he was a big soda drinker as well and since banding.. we don't have it anymore, well I definitely don't and he has cut down about 95%. So it was win/win.

and Chez speak it! lol..

Good luck.. it will get easier the more you stay away and make up your mind it is just something that can potentially harm you. Propel Zero is awesome btw. :)

My NUT said I could have 8oz of a diet soda once a week over the course of an hour. I haven't because I'm afraid lol

It seems that some will always have a "trouble area" that will end up hurting in the end.

The band is ONE tool. The other do's and don'ts are additional tools.

IMHO, if the doc says don't then don't. Who are you hurting other than yourself if you don't follow their direction.

The process of getting the band was long and hard. Post op was hard. Why jeapordize it all for a soda?

Lol! Chez is DO honest and real with all of us. . .that's why I love her!!! Why compromise something you're working so hard to achieve! I gave soda up cold turkey before surgery. I was drinking Rt.44 Dr.Pepper w/longer from Sonic on a daily. . .but, this is something that I really wanted (and I'm self paid), so I WILL NOT RISK IT!

I think you can still make lifestyle changes and still every once in a while in moderation have things you like. You will do better and last longer if every once in while have a treat. Listen to your doctor not people who think they know it all!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
