Is Soda Bad Once In A While?

Recommended Posts

I know the answer but wanted to see if anyone enjoys a diet soda once in a while. I had some the other day while at my parents. All they had was juice and Water. Juice had lots of calories and the water smells like eggs ( they live in west Virginia ) so I didn't want to drink my calories so I had some diet coke. I used to drink it all the time but quit cold turkey after surgery. Thanks for any input!

My dr made me promise to avoid carbonation at all costs. No exceptions....so no I haven't enjoyed my beloved diet coke in 2 years. However he did say I could drink flat soda... Which I tried and it was awful in my opinion. Others may disagree.

In a word yes! Once in a while leads to every so often, leads to once a day, leads to several a day, leads to trouble. That's how we got here.. on exception at a time.

well i guess if someone really wants to drink it (even if the dr suggested not to) then they will.

i weened off of it on my preop and never wanted another one...i guess its up to the person.

but with the carbonation issues, why risk it.

I realize that this would be a hassle. I recommend bringing drinks with you that are no calorie. I find my biggest challenges are when I am NOT prepared for situations that come up. Some are easier to deal with the others such as bringing Protein Bars in your car or keeping drinks there as well. I think it would be a very slippery slope you would end up drinking soda more and more which could cause a problem. Personally in that situation if I had to have a drink I would have chosen juice. Perhaps even watering it down so that you could drink more ounces for the same amount of calories.

Soda is not a good choice. Plain Water is the best and adding flavoring if you need to.

Best answer ever!!! It's like any habit that needs to be broken... that first slip won't kill you... it probably won't even hurt you... but it will definitely lead to the next, the next, the next, so on and on!!!

I quit smoking 20 years ago this month... but I also know that one draw would lead to another and then a full cig, and eventually I'd be buying them by the carton again.

I'm not going down that path or the soda path ever again if I can help it!!

I used to drink regular pepsi every day, and now i just drink plain old Water. It's easy, free, and in every place i might go. Lol. I have made peace with knowing i will never have pepsi again, because my health is more important. I am not interested in any kind of slippage lol

I thought that the soda was because of the calories. I didnt know about the carbonation. What can carbonation do? I also didnt know whats wrong with using a straw.

Carbonation is the only "forbidden" food for banded people. The reason is twofold: First, it can stretch the pouch above the band. The more serious and second reason is, it can cause band slips.

liquids pass through the band immediately, but carbonation expands in the stomach. When this happens, the pressure pushes upward on the band from below, causing the potential for a slip.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
