How Long Should I Take Off Of Work?

Recommended Posts

How much time do you all think I should take off work for lap band surgery? I have a desk job at a bank. Thanks!

I too have a desk job and took off a week just to play it safe, everyone has a different level of pain tolerance and you never know how you will react to having surgery, so like I said to play it safe if you can afford a week, I would do this. Your doctor may even have a suggestion.

Well, the first time around when I got the band, one week wasn't quite enough... felt extremely dizzy and light-headed and the seventh day post-op, which was my first day back at work, I thought I was going to die.

I've just had revision of my slipped band with plication, and took two weeks off to play it safe... only this time I feel great! Other than just very minimal pain the first couple of days I've been fine!! In fact, I feel so good, that I rearranged all my living room furniture yesterday and got the house completely decorated for Christmas, which was my post-op day 8... that might have been a bit stupid, but I still feel fine.

How you will feel after surgery is an entirely individual process. Is it possible to "play it by ear" with your time off? Take as much time as you're able, but go back sooner if you feel like it?

At least one week. I do a lot of sitting, however it hurt sooo much sitting..my back...and my port. I had to keep standing up, and re positioning myself in my seat. I was completely miserable my first week back to work. . Also, it hurt to drive. I was one of the banders who had a lot of post op pain. I was miserable for about nine days after.... It got better after but I had wished I took off a little more than a week! Also, sleeping for me was rough the first week so I got about half sleep a night as I normally did.

I was one of those lucky ones that had no pain and bounced back quickly. I took a week off, have a desk job, could have gone back sooner, but I didn't.

took a week and didn't really need it all.

as long as you can sip and deal with the diet your up to and no pain meds you should be ok.( and no lifting)

A week. I didn't feel "normal" til 2 or 3 weeks out, but by a week you're functional.

I was back to normal in two or three days. It is different from everyone. Just take enough tome to get settled on how you will get your food in when you go back to work.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
