Almost Feeling Ridiculed

Recommended Posts

Sorry i'm venting...So I had my surgery 16 Nov. Wife was Luke warm to the idea because she thought I could do this on my own. I told 1 other person it now the entire family knows. Common theme is "why would you do that if you can loose 40lbs on Protein Shakes by yourself?" You didn't need surgery. I get sneers now from all family members who know and the first thing they say is "you're loosing weight". Already getting tired of this. Ready to snap back.

Ugh. Sorry to hear that. That's why I told 2 people and luckily they didn't tell anyone. I know you were just venting. Hang in there. You did this for you and to get healthy. Good luck!

Quite honestly? I would snap back! If they can be inconsiderate jerks, then you can put them in their place for their ignorant behavior. You don't and shouldn't have to tolerate that behavior, especially when you're doing all you can to be healthier. Speak up for yourself and take it from them.

Best wishes to you.

It is hard when family is not co operating. Just remember, you did this for yourself and no one else - not even your wife.

Stick to the plan your dr. gave you and you will have the last laugh in the end because you will be healthy and fit despite their attitudes :)

I just laugh and say...im eatting right and walking every day !

I don't understand why people feel the need to behave that way...instead of just having your back.. saying good for you! and let it be and let you do your thing. Like the other's said, this is for you and no one else... good luck hun on your journey!

Unless the naysayers paid for your surgery they really have no right to offer their rude comments. And if they did pay for your surgery they must ha e believed in you so ask them why the change of heart.

My reply to anyone you wasnt on my team would be....I appreciate your interest but I would prefer if you kept your comments to yourself. This is my journey and i need your support not your ridicule. The band isnt a miracle cure .... its a tool to help me lose weight and keep it off. And oh by the way... Just because I was banded doesn't mean the weight is going to drop off in a month.

What u said about them saying y do u need surgery? I always snapped back and said with this there will be consequences if I mess up. I hate being sick and sore. whereas if u did it on ur own all u would get is just a slap on the wrist. with this surgery comes accountability. This tells me...u know....I've went through all this stuff to get this and I'm going to stick with it and rock it for sure. :)

"That crazy surgery".... man it annoys me when people say it like that!

To me It's MUCH crazier to threaten my health by wildly fluctuating in weight in short periods of time, binge, starve, obsess about food, take harmful diet drugs, never go out with friends (in fear of bingeing when trying to diet, or being the 'fat one') and hate myself because of all the drama.... over and over and over again.

My husbands family are all skinny so when they found out at first they were disgusted and thought it was way to extreme. I decided to educate them on the procedure and talk about how it was gonna help me be healthy and they came around to it!

It's worth educating your loved ones so they see it's a positive thing... but to everyone else? Tell them to buzz off.

Do they want you to live on Protein Shakes the rest of your life? Duh, anyone can lose weight on Protein shakes.... Obviously they don't understand the problem isn't losing weight, it's living in a way where you aren't forced to live on Protein Shakes to maintain a healthy weight.

Try and block it out and focus on your goals, they'll deal with it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
