Eating Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

My surgeon is not requiring me to do a pre-op diet before surgery because of my BMI. I just have to be NPO after midnight. I hadn't planned on having any sort of "last supper" because I just don't want to have that attitude. However, my birthday is the day before surgery so my family wants to take me out to dinner (as always, for birthdays.) Also, we will be in a hotel the night before surgery because I live far away from the hospital, so we will need to eat something. I'll have something light and healthy (like fish without heavy sauce), but here's my concern: I see so many people having trouble with Constipation that I'm wondering if I should do an overnight laxative to try to get rid of as much food as possible before surgery. (I've only ever taken a laxative once and it was agonizing...so crampy!) Thoughts, please.

I don't believe you will need to take a laxative pre op, and your surgeon should give you a script for either a stool softener or a laxative for post op.

Most of the problems, at least for me were due to a complete lack of Fiber post op. Things have gotten much better the further out from surgery I am.

Best wishes for a successful journey!

I wouldn't take a laxative. You might add Fiber supplement to your liquid a day or 2 before. It's tasteless and incomes in individual packets like crystal light.

I don't understand why no preop. It as well all know doctors differ on that topic.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
