Can't Eat Meat

Recommended Posts

I had lap band on Oct. 10, 2012. So far I have lost 37 pounds and have about 70 more to go. Before the lap band I was not a fan of meat, I hate steak. Mainly because of the texture. I could tolerate a hamburger with lots of bread and cheese. After the lap band now that I have to chew chew chew I cannot stand the way meat feels. All the flavor leaves and you are left with a crumbly, stringy mush in your mouth before you swollow. I don't want to eat meat anymore! Has anyone else been turned off by meat and do you have any suggesstions for how to get your Protein intake besides eggs?

I'm a big meat eater but I have yet to cook a steak and eat one. Just small pieces of roast beef in Soups is all I eat and lots of chicken diced carefully and chewed carefully.

Swai fish with tarter sauce, doesn't smell fishy, taste fishy, and is really moist, goes down good. Lately I've been on a kick and breading it (low carb bread crumbs), cook it in the oven, and made my own tarter sauce and it's delish. Even if you hate fish, I would give this a try and it's cheap too!

I am a texture eater as well. The ground beef doesn't bother me too much when i eat it in chili or make it with sauce in the pan like a sloppy joe. Burgers sometimes make me gag. The steak which is most friendly to me is skirt steak but be careful to cut into tiny pieces.

I don't eat steak to often every couple of months. I don't miss it.

try chili with ground beef or ground turkey or sloppy joes

I too am a big texture person. I hate steak not because of the taste but because of the texture. If I get a piece of meat in my mouth with even a little fat on it, or if it gets all stringy, I will literally gag and have to spit it out.

I find if I prepare meat in a way to keep it nice and moist, I do ok with it. I'm big on marinades for both pork chops and chicken. I let them soak for at least 3 hours before cooking them. When meat is moist it doesn't get that stringy chewy texture.

I would do a little experimentation and see if different cooking methods improve your experience.

There are lots of wats to get your Protein. chicken, fish, beans, veggie burgers (lots to choose from) I buy precooked frozen chicken and then add to BBQ or chilli. Can use to make chicken salad or in Soups. This is a great time to get creative and have fun! I also don't make it a habit of drinking my calories it just makes me hungry sooner. I eat half cup 3 to 4 times a day I track on spark people and have been reaching my protein goals. Best of luck to you!

Greek yogurt is a great Protein option but I am hungry within an hour so I don't eat it. tuna or canned chicken. You can make your own chicken salad with some light mayo. Fresh fish in a pan you can buy some marinated. There are a lot of options just have to be creative. If you can't eat any solid Proteins could you be to filled?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
