Weight Loss On Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Holy crap! Enough already! One comment is going to scare this woman from ever coming back here for support. I believe this has been blown WAY out of proportion and it really needs to stop. Maybe you thought she was harsh, but who among us has never said something that gets misinterpreted or misread?

The personal attacks need to stop. Let the first perfect bandster step forward and take over the entire forum...

This has gotten ridiculous.

From an imperfect person...done and out.

I agree, It is ENOUGH. Your defense of the OP asking a question to which there is no CONCRETE answer and getting that answer from a poster and then chastising the answer you got is a personal attack. Some people have a pre-op diet, some don't (I didn't--therefore I didn't lose any weight), some people have different orders from doctors for different lengths of time, so there is NO ANSWER to the OPs question.

I'm sure I'll hear from Alex, and that's ok. But CG is a great source of information as are many of the other bandsters here, and she only shared what she knew about.

DONE.

I'm hoping to lose a lot on pre op diet because my wedding rings are stuck on me, and I don't want them cut off for surgery. I plan to go to a jeweler 2 days b4 surgery if they still won't budge. I have a month to pre op diet, so I'm trying to be healthy most of the time now, then my liquid diet. I also am interested in hearing how much people who did a pre op diet lost. I'm guessing if I lose 20 pounds in the next 6 weeks (very hard maybe not possible but who knows I don't have experience with a liquid diet...which is why it is nice to her from those who do) maybe my rings will come off...I'm hoping!!!!

Every Dr. has different instructions. A lot of ppl have to do a 2wk liquid diet, others count calorie diet.

I didn't not have to do a diet b/c I had already been dieting for 6mths.

The idea of the liquid diet is to shrink the liver b/c it is in the way and if it's all fatty ,it's like handling Jello.

Best of luck on your journey!

That's what the second poster CG on this thread was saying, everyone is different ,so it's hard to compare yourself to anyone else. I hope you can lose enough weight so your rings come off. I didn't have to do a diet before surgery b/c I had already been on a diet for 6mths. and lost 34lbs. I would try sticking to banded rules while your waiting for your surgery. Eat off smaller plate, take smaller bites and chew 20-30times putting fork down between bites and waiting 1 min between bites and only eating for 20-30 mins whether your plates empty or not, you're done. Don't drink with meals or 30 mins after. Eat Protein first, then veggies and good carbs. drink 64 oz of Water a day and lay off soda. That's how I lost the 34 lbs and I really believe it was great practice for how I'm doing now. I already had gone through sweets & bad carb withdrawal, so after surgery that wasn't a problem.

You can do this and if you work really hard you can get that ring off!

Best wishes on your journey!

My doctor put me on a 500 calorie pre op diet that he thought I could do for like months. I followed it very closely for 6 days I weighed over 300 pounds at that point. I also exercise pretty religously 7 days a week for an hour a day so I was pretty active. Lost nothing!! The shakes started giving me a funny feeling in my throat like an allergy. I spoke to my nurse practitioner and went back to my personal diet plan. I ended up losing 50 pounds before my surgery so I thought that was successful. I think trying to live up to it 500 calories well being I'm active person is crazy.

CarolinaGirl's response to you was (IMO) neutral, and as specific as you can get because weight loss (pre and post-op) varies hugely from one person to the next, for dozens of reasons.

Now, my own specific answer to your question is that I lost 19.5 lbs on my pre-op diet.

Ladies,

I disrespected no one. I used the same open forum you speak of. I'm not trying to 'compare my success'. I'm trying to determine if my experience is normal. I'm embarking on a new life, which many of you are currently in. I respect your journey. But I have questions and I'm not in need of a lecture. From anyone. As I originally stated, if you don't have an answer for me, that's ok. If you choose not to give me advice, don't. I can live with it. But I won't be bullied into seeing things the way you want me to. Have a great day ladies.

Stubborn.

My nurses just put a bandaid over my rings. I wonder if that is an option for you?

I am shocked the nurse let you cover up with bandaids... They use electrical current tools to control bleeding during surgery, also you could swell even more during surgery and cause loss of circulation especially is fingers and toes, plus rings harbor large amounts of germs. My hospital wouldn't allow any jewelry at all, as most hospitals I know... Maybe different for laparoscopic procedures in certain places but that nurse shouldn't have allowed that and it's definitely out of the "norm".

Well Vanessa, I hope you recover from your shock fairly quickly because the hospital DID cover up my rings AND I had none of those issues that you described. Also, my surgeon was in the room when she did it and he said it was also fine. My rings were not too tight, I just forgot to take them off before getting to the hospital.

I agree it is out of the norm but....I just stated what my experience was. Didn't mean to SHOCK anyone.

Wow, this must really be the forum for attitudes. I was shocked, but like I said, it must vary from hospital to hospital and doc to doc... Seems like almost everything with the lap band experience differs in some way or another. That wasn't an attack on anyone, just stating the reasons they don't normally allow that so the other person could be informed that it's not typical. Sorry to ruffle feathers... Damn... People need to chill... It's only a forum and nobody on this site is in high school. *stepsoffsoapbox

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
