Things I Didn't Even Think Of...

Recommended Posts

So, as I said before I have my consultation with the surgeon on Dec 18 and hope to have the surgery in the spring. I was wondering....how long are most people off of work? I don't want to have to use FMLA because I have to use all my vacation and sick time first, and have a week scheduled off to get married next fall (so if I couldn't get that week off I'd have some huge problems!)

If I have to take some sort of leave of absence, I do have short term disablity thru AFLAC. I have the medical benefit as well so I don't know if they would pay me for the hospital stay or anything like that. Anyone deal with this with AFLAC before?

I know I should probably wait and ask my doctor but I am an overthinker and I am slightly impatient!

I had surgery on a Tuesday, returned to my office job the following Monday.

It depends on what job you have and how you feel.

Good luck on your journey.

I do have a desk job, so I'm hoping I can just do a few shift switches and schedule a few personal days and have the time off I need --- and with pay.

I had surgery on a Tuesday, returned to my office job the following Monday.

It depends on what job you have and how you feel.

Good luck on your journey.

If you work an office/desk job, a week off is usually enough.

If your work requires lifting/manual labor, you'll probably need more time.

One to two weeks, depending on your job and depending on how you are affected by the general anaesthesia.

I am in Australia and we get sick leave - an allowance of days per year that we can be off sick and still get paid. Sometimes require a medical certificate but not always. How does it work in America?

I simply told my boss that I was having surgery and that my surgeon recommended I take two weeks off - no problems and I was paid.

As for scheduled in advance time off, at my job we can only have two people off per shift per day....so it can be incredibly difficult to request time off in advance. We do get 10 sick days per year, but I do not want to use them all in the event I get sick....I would be written up and face disciplinary action for calling off once I was out of time. If I apply for medical leave, they take all of our vacation and sick days first and it is unpaid....but my short term disablity would kick in.

I'm hoping I can have surgery on Tuesday, take 5 work days off....and I would not have to return to work until the following Thursday...of course, I don't even see the surgeon until Dec 18 so I'm what looking at June anyway? I may be worrying a bit too early!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
