Weight Gain????? Why???

Recommended Posts

Refresher............ I was banded on the 22nd,..(not that long ago I realize)

I dont weigh often at all...in fact 2 times total since surgery with today being my 2nd time..... but decided I was feeling good about myself and decided to weigh at home to see how it was going...I GAINED 3 lbs...yes gained.

Now...I track my food on "lose it" am staying around 900-1000 calories a day and no cheating what so ever.

HOW IN THE WORLD is it possible to gain weight on a restricted amt of food...I want to cry!

I feel like a MORON....gaining weight after having weight loss surgery..... I mean what is the point.

I can gain weight easily on my own with out having had surgery???!!

I guess it is so frustrating as I am following exact what I am to do, eating the proper amts and nothing more.

HOw is it possible to eat 1/4 of what I used to eat, cutting out all sweets and pop etc only to gain weight.

BUMMED BIG TIME

First, are you sure your scale is accurate?

Is it anywhere near period time?

Have you been having a lot of sodium?

All these things can definitely make the scale go up. You also should realize how greatly the body can fluctuate in weight from day to day. I have seen the scale bounce 3 pounds up and then down 4 in a week's time. Body weight isn't constant by a long shot.

Also, you are very newly banded. Your body is in some major shock, between the surgery itself and the post op diet, it seriously doesn't know which way is up right now. This is a big part of the reason I always tell people the first 4-6 weeks after surgery are for healing, not losing, to give your body time to recover.

I know it's hard but don't be discouraged. Give your body time to adjust and heal. You're very much on the right track.

Hang in there.

Mis73, I appreciate your "preaching" the 4-6 weeks thing. I'm 3 weeks from banding and I have decided not to even get on the scale until at least 4 weeks post op, and maybe 6.

Take a deep breath ladies!!! During my first month I was a basket case only wanting to see the weight going down. However, daily your weight fluctuates. Like you said when you are living on a calorie count of 800-1000 it is impossible to gain!!!

Like missy said your weight can be up from Salt content, period, and depends on the time of day you weigh. I am one of those who weighs dailey, each morning as soon as I wake up and pee. All I have on is a light weight T-shirt. This way the day to day is more accurate. I chart this. My weight flucuates between 2 lbs a week. One day I may be 201.6 the next 202.6, however living on my 1200 calorie diet it is impossible for me to have gained a pound. The pound can be from Water weight, exericse, ect - tons of reasons.

This is why I weigh each day. I chart daily and at the end of the week I take an average- as long as that average is down I am good, if it's up I go and look at what I did for the week or what time of the month it is.

Honestly, you really may not have gained. Not to mention like Missy says the first month you are healing, if you don't lose don't sweat it, you will.

Try not to stress that nasty stress horomone will not help you!

Hi PJ, I was banded on the 22 of Oct also. You must be my band mate. I would not worry about gaining 3 pounds. Like people have told me "you are still healing". If you are like me, your tummy is still a little sore, right? I am focusing on healing right now until my first fill (dec 3rd) and taking it easy on eating. Don't worry, our lbt friends say the weight will drop sooner or later. Trust your band and make it work for you but heal first. ok?

Ok...just dont want to be going to my first appt having gained weight...will try and be patient. :) Anyway...I dont feel anything..my incisions have looked great from week 2 on and honestly cant tell I had anything done. Two of the incisions are actually almost non visible at this point..no soreness what so ever but maybe on the inside it is and I just dont feel it. Will wait it out and hoping it is just Water or salt weight for today. Thanks everyone for the encouragement...LOVE this site and the advice from some of the regulars...

PJ, I was a little worried about gaining too. I had stopped losing but I know my body is adjusting. I had also started working out a little. I do about 10 to 20 minutes walking or elliptical here and there.

I have 5 incisions and the biggest one (i think my port is in there) still hurts the most. . I still have pain when I bend over to put my shoes on or have to pick up something on the floor. You are lucky you only have 2 incisions.

Me too, I am so thankful for this site. My lbt friends have been so supportive. I could not have done this on my own.

My 4th to 5th week i didn't lose weight. I was eating suckers and candy. It actually makes up the difference. Your sugar level needs to ne in the 80s to lose. Even if your over weight and only eating suckers your body holds on to the fat. A skinny person eating suckers probably can eat suckers and still have low sugar because their body burns different.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
