BandedBettyBoop 36 Posted November 15, 2012 started liquids today. Only problem is I was given a whey Protein Shake and I'm lactose intolerant. The bariatric coordinator told me to just take imodium. After the reaction im having from the first shake, I can see it is going to be a long 2 wks. :-( Any suggestions?
Aqusis 16 Posted November 15, 2012 Is it whey Protein isolate? The isolate should help with lactose intolerance. If its straight whey I can imagine it would be a problem.
BandedBettyBoop 36 Posted November 15, 2012 I don't remember it saying on the container, must not be because I'm experiencing a problem :-/
this sucks 557 Posted November 15, 2012 Whey Protein can cause you a problem if you are lactose intolerant, but look closely at the labels. A lot of whey Protein Shakes are lactose free, you just need to double check the labels. I use "Isopure" available at GNC or Meijer. They have 40 g of protein and if you get the zero carb flavors, they only have 160 calories in a large bottle. They are kind of pricey, but you need to have something that isn't going to have you running.well, you know.
BandedBettyBoop 36 Posted November 15, 2012 Thanks rkimom. It just sucks because I can't return this Protein shake anywhere. The doc office supplied it ($350 program fee). I just looked up the stats on Isopure & looks like my best option. Thank you SO much for the suggestion. Any flavor preferences? I feel like I've failed my pre op diet on day 1. I've only gotten 1 "meal" in and its out! :-( rough day!
Amy337 8 Posted November 16, 2012 The same thing just happens to me! I called the Dr and told them I was having issues and they put me on an 800 cal diet with no fat.. And their going to refund the money I paid for the shakes.< /p>

It has kind of a funky thickness, but it's palatable. Just drink a lot of water!
this sucks 557 Posted November 16, 2012 Also, my drs office has a product called Procal that doesn't cause me any trouble. It's a powder and I mix it up with lactose free milk to boost the Protein. You can order Procal on line too.
BandedBettyBoop 36 Posted November 16, 2012 Thanks again. I bought the Isopure this morning. I've had 2 shakes now with no issues! I have a appt with my surgeon today so I'll be sure to tell him about the switcheroo I made. I got the dutch chocolate one. Not bad. It's lighter than shakes I typically have had. But I only did 1 scoop. I'll ask him if he wants me to do 2. The sales clerk in the store says some ppl get sick taking 50 grams of Protein at a time? So I did 1 scoop. Zipline 0 Posted November 17, 2012 Yes, I have a suggestion that worked for me. I went to a nutrition store and told them about my lactose intolerance and it turns out that there are lots of alternatives to whey Protein. There's vegetable based protein and rice protein powders that totally made that problem go away. Good Luck!
honk 780 Posted November 17, 2012 whey isolate is the best type of Protein for your body to burn. If you're going to do a different type of protein you may need to consume more grams of it.
BandedBettyBoop 36 Posted November 17, 2012 Zipline I've tried a veggie based shake and hated it! Paid $40 for it too :-( I did go to a store and they gave me some tips. Honk, you are certainly right. Whether isolate is apparently the best way to go. Isopure has treated me well for the last 4 meals. No reactions. I just wish I knew before I took that first shake!
