Solids After Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.. Hope everyones well and losing weight!

I had my surgery 12 days ago, and was only on liquids for the first week as instructed.. Since then, I've got my appetite back and have been on solids since.. I didn't do the puree thing.. Is this normal? I'm able to eat all foods and significant portions.. Do I just need a fill?? Has anyone else gone straight to solids a week after surgery? Thanks in advance :)

Every surgeon is different. I was on 2 weeks liquids, 1 week pureed and blenderized and then slowely introduced solids. They didn't do my first fill until 6 weeks post surgery.

I was told to do 2 weeks puree after my 1 week of liquids, but I haven't done this as I found I was able to eat solids straight away.. my first fill is Dec 4th... We'll see what happens.. Thanks for your reply :)

Then you should not be eating solids. Period. No exceptions.

The surgeon gave you the post op diet to allow your stomach time to heal. It has nothing to do with hunger or weight loss. By not following his instructions and skipping right to solid foods, you are putting yourself at very real risk of injury or complications.

If you're smart, you'll go back to puree foods as instructed and tell your surgeon what you did. This way he can make sure you haven't done any damage.

Good luck.

I have also been eating solids I went to my first post op and she told me I should be eating baby foods and such. I tried them they are nasty so I just been sticking to Soups. She told me what ever easily falls off the spoon. Soups and apple sauce has been ok. I'm still hungry all the time but I'm trying to do right every now and then I will eat some solids like Beans or macaroni.< /p>

babies eat baby food...adults need adult foods.

macaroni is not really a (healthy option) if you must eat, try for more Protein as that is what will keep you full....

Why are you eating baby food? What is wrong with yogurt, anything healthy in a blender with some good chicken or beef stock. You can not be successful if you can't make food taste good. I can't believe your doctors didnt give you a list of foods that you can eat. Did you see a nutritionist? Have you consulted them since surgery? Don't go on your own indulgences because you're hungry. No one had died from hunger from the band. You will soon enough be able to eat food. If you dont let your stomach heal you can cause your band to slip.

The doctor suggested baby foods and things with that same texture. I got a blender yesterday and was going to try some different foods. I have very hush blood pressure so I couldn't do the chicken brother even the low sodium gave me headaches. So I'm trying to read around and see what other people are eating. Yogurt gives me the runs and that is so not good especially when I'm at work. I don't want to eat the baby food but right now that and Apple sauce are working. No I don't think I will die from being hungry, but who wants to be hungry all the time?

To add to all the other great posts above, the post op diet is for proper recovery. You can cause your band to slip or not be positioned correctly by eating solids too soon. It takes weeks for the recovery process and when you are eating solid and heavy foods you are putting extra pressure on your stoma (the band, sutures, etc) and can cause harm. It is sooooo important to listen to your surgeon's instructions.

Also, mushy foods can be greek yogurt (high protein), scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, and blenderized meals. I made my normal meals for my family and put my 3-4 ounces of meat in the blender with chicken broth or a sauce of some sort and while it may not have looked good, it tasted fine. Those are just some ideas for Protein. Note that it is very important to eat Protein first as it will keep you satiated.

Sorry if the replies seem harsh but by not following your post-op instructions you could be jeopardizing your health, recovery and success with the band. You will get through this - we all did!

Best of luck to you.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
