Newbie, Ins Approved But Have 3Mnth Preleminary, Any Advice?

Recommended Posts

I am hoping my surgeon will recommend the lap band. My first visit is November 16,2012. Tuesday, November 6 was one of the happiest days of my life. I found out that my insurance will pay 100% of surgery. Within one hour of finding out I called the Dr's office to find out the next seminar. I was starting within an hour. I dropped everything I was doing to make it there. By Thursday I received a call from their office stating that I was approved but had to go through a 3month period where I need to try to lose some weight with by other methods. Can anyone shed any light on this if you have gone through this process.

I had to do a 6mth supervised diet. Went to PCP every month. I lost a couple lbs a month, was afraid if I lost too much they would deny me. After ins approval I kicked it up a notch and lost 34 lbs before surgery. My Dr allowed me to choose my own diet, I did MyFitnessPal 1500 cal.

Best wishes on your journey!

most people have to do a six month diet for the insurance. If you can afford it have the doctor recommend a nutritionist ( most insurance will not cover this ) the cost will be about 100 a month. That way all will be documented. Good luck and hugs

You don't tell us your weight or your BMI. that in some cases determines how much you should lose.. If you have a little to lose and lose to much the insurance can deny you by saying you can do this on your own.......If you have a lot to lose then this maybe an indicator of how you can lose weight.. Ask your Dr. he deals with insurance companys all the time and he can can tell you what he thinks is correct and what diet to follow. Best wishes.

Thanks Mayasgram, my bmi is 50 and I'm hoping he will recommend the lap band over the other procedures. I have been practicing chewing my food slower and not eating seconds. I am a snacker so I was careful not to buy junk food. I will start back on my body by vi shakes tomorrow. I want to lose at few pounds before I go to Dr. Sharma's office on Friday.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
