30Lbs Down And Airplanes

Recommended Posts

It depends on the airline. I fly several times a year for work and numerous times for pleasure. When I was 377 lbs fat I only was told I would need to buy another seat one time. That was on a Southwest flight. I had flown from home to San Diego with no issues. But on the return flight they told me I had to buy a 2nd seat. It was the most humiliating experience. I countered them by showing them my frequest flyer # and saying in so many words....I wasnt too fat to get to San Diego... why am I too fat to get home. They actually didnt end up charging me but did issue a 2nd ticket for me for free which reserved the seat next to me.

That was in August 2010. That was almost the last shove I needed to get banded.

Me too same airline, same response ! showed my rapid reward card , told them I fly every week . The agent actually looked up my number to verify.it happened to be my 3rd flight that week. The good thing about southwest is that there is no assigned seating.it's open seating. so I actually try to make my self " spread across" the seat or put my bag in the seat next to me and avoid eye contact from people looking for " permission " to take the seat ! It's only hard if the plane is full and every seat is taken or I don't get the pre board ticket or am running late and there are only middle seats left.

I think the night before I am going to check the seats and see if any are open so I can sit by myself.

I think that will be helpful and less stressful.good luck !

When I flew Jet Blue coach in 2009, I was 275, 5'10" and a 22 pant size. It was tight, but didn't need the seatbelt extension or armrests up. Fast forward to 2012, 325lbs and size 26, flying Alaska Air coach and I needed the extension and probably would have been asked to buy a second seat if I weren't sitting next to my tiny 3 year old daughter who had room for me to spread out.

Also, I'm flying down to San Diego next month, bought myself two seats just in case. The extra $150 it cost me is worth the peace of mind.

I think I am stressing out over nothing. I now weight 236 but I measured how wide my butt is and sitting its wider that 18 inches. I am more worried I think is about having to ask for an extender. Yeah measuring my butt was funny. Lol.

Southwest is awful about targeting larger passengers! My husband was told he had to buy an extra seat, he refused as it was his 4th flight with them in 2 days and nothing was ever said! We are both now banded and I can't wait to take out flight next August together as smaller healthier people... Definitely won't me on Southwest though :)

The only problem I have with flying is fitting in a seat :(

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
