16 Days Post Op, Down 20 Lbs

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. It's been weird here in NYC because my doctors have DISAPPEARED post Sandy. I didn't get to have my post op appointment at NYU or my esophogram. I call all the time and the say they will call back but don't. I called to see if I should advance my diet, no one called back. So I'm just winging it. But it's going ok. The weight loss is encouraging of course but eating is weird. Dies this sound normal to you? I am never hungry because I always feel stuffed. Yes, stuffed. food goes down fine... I'm on mushies. No stuck episodes. But I can't eat much at all, I know that's the point, but I'm on mfp and every day it tells me I'm eating too few calories. Yesterday I had 655 calories. I can't eat more than 1/2 to 1 cup of food 3 times a day.

I ate around 700 calories each day for over a year while I was losing. Now that I'm maintaining I take in around 800 each day. This is what worked for me. Everyone is different. My doc was fine with this. I hope you will get in contact with your dr soon, as follow up care is paramount to success with the band, Good luck! :)

How about calling the administration at the hospital? Just in case something was to go wrong.

Thanks for your feedback guys. Still can't reach my dr. I get a person and they say someone will call me back but no one does. Monday I'm supposed to advance to normal food but I think I'm gonna stay on mushies. No harm right? Very encouraging and reassuring though that others feel the same and that others are doing ok on the caloric intake I'm doing. Thank you so much

You are still swollen from the surgery. Let your body heal before you start weighing yourself. I had my surgery last week and asked my husband to hide the scale so I am not tempted! Don't want to get frustrated!

I'm 5 weeks post op and eating about 600-700 cal a day too. The only difference between mushy and soft food phase is that with the soft foods you mush it up in your mouth instead of the blender. The only thing you need to worry about though is not putting stress on your band by not chewing your food well.

Sounds as if everyone here is doing pretty well. Me too, just four days out - not at all hungry -clear liquids till Friday - not a problem so far. Am pretty excited, and excited too as always about preparing for family for Thanksgiving. what do we eat women? I'll be on mushies by then?

Thanks for advice. Take care everybody.

Your still swollen from surgery and everything inside you was moved around! Mashed potatoes might be your good friend on Thanksgiving. ;). Just make sure your taking your Vitamins and getting proper amount of Protein. My counselors all tell me Protein First. I wasn't hungry at first either, and had to "remember" to eat. That was a new thing for me. Everyone is different, but I was told never to go under 1000 calories a day. If you go under that your body might take from someplace you don't want it to, like bones. That is one problem no one needs. Listen to your Dr. And staff, that is what they are there for and what your paying them for. Good luck on your journey. A real reason to be Thankful this year, is your surgery is over!

I had surgery last Wednesday, so 6 days post op, and at my appt yesterday, I had only lost 3 lbs. it was kind of discouraging because I've had nothing but broth, Jello and Water... How can you not lose more? I'm excited to get to full liquids tomorrow, and start adding Protein back into my diet. I hope it helps with a more rapid loss.

Anyone have any good options for full liquids?

Hi. I called my doctor as I was five days out and not a pound lost - even with just Clear Liquids. He told me to be sure i was drinking enough - that if I wasn't the pounds would not drop. sure enough, amped up my liquids, and saw six pounds drop the next day - probably Water weight, but I'll take it. I'm just so excited and hopeful for the first time in a loooong time. I'm taking 15-20 minute walks everyday, but my goal is a 5k in May (at my job). What are the goals some of you women have?

Side note: rapid weight loss is not what we are looking for nor what is promised. 1-2 lbs a week once in green zone. Everything else is cake...concentrate on getting better and it will all work itself out in the end.

Pre-op 275.9lbs -surgery 10/5 265.0lbs -11/11/12 241.8lbs

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
