So I been noticing lately when I shower I seem to have a lot more hair coming out. I seem to be shedding worse than the cat! Is thinning hair normal after surgery? Any thing I can do to help it???

My surgeon said it is VERY normal. Mainly due to missing Vitamins and/or Protein.< /p>

She suggests Biotin but I don't know how much to take.

Might be a good reason to call your doc, you don't want to lose a strand of that nice brown hair. Good luck!

Supposedly Biotin helps this but, like you, I'm already in the shed cycle. I think it's too late.

GNC sells Biotin chews and tablets. Maybe it will help our next shed cycle.

I know - its scary!!!

Yes, its very normal - Mine is breaking off less and less. I have been taking some precautions, such as eating balanced meals daily, a Multivitamin, Biotin gelcaps, rinsing my hair with cool Water and never hot, spraying my hair with Paul Mitchell strong hair treatments. Every little bit helps in trying to combat the hair from breaking. Just remember that this is temporary....

I just went to Sally's Beauty Supply and got a Shampoo and conditioner thats supposed to help. I was told since I just started noticing more Hair loss it should work. I hope it does! Also went to buy Biotin. It probably is from the lack of Vitamins. I bought some online that tastes nasty but since I bought a lot kinda want to use them. (Im cheap like that)

Good to know its only temporary! How long does it normally last?

I really have no clue, I started shedding (hair breaking) about a month after surgery. As of now I have less breakage this is a good sign. My hair is growing as I just got it cut and less hair on the brush and in the shower.

It's scary, but normal. I started loosing a bunch of hair about 5 months post op- it lasted about 3 months. I went to the dermatologist and much to my relief he told me I wouldn't go bald. His answer was that your body goes into kind of a shock after rapid weight loss and that's why I was loosing hair. I didn't take any supplements or use a special Shampoo and it stopped. In my opinion, save your money.

Been there, done that. I am 4years out and my hair has been steadily falling out where it was somewhat noticeable. Since I have always been a DIY person with my hair until the last few years, I had quite a few tricks to make it look thicker while I was trying to figure out what to do. I have been checking all the questions and answers on this board and on the internet about weight losss and Hair loss and it seems it goes hand in hand. I did start Biotin about 6 months ago and upped the dosage from 2000 mcg to 5000 mcg and I actually am starting to see some new growth in the front hairline. I can't seem to eat enough Protein to keep my hair so I guess I will be taking biotin for quite a while. If there is something else out there that can help, please let me know. My hair was thin to begin with and this was the scariest part of my journey. I tried the different shampoos and conditioners and nothing seemed to work for me.

Oh geez, I agree this is crazy. My hair is already thin. I can't afford to lose anymore! I started using Biotin 10,000 mg before I had surgery. I got it at Walmart for like $5.

i noticed about month 2 to 3 1/2, that in the tub, more hair and more hair. like the poster above me, i am thinned hair and was like WTF........but my surgeon i asked and he advised me that it would slow down and i am right at 5 months post op and its fine.....i do alot of Protein and take my Vitamins. some say the Biotin works and some do not......i will keep my opinion on that to myself and i put my trust in the Protein and it seems to be working..

so it will slow down. i say that as that is what happened to me. if overly worried, ask your surgeon and let them advise..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
