Ang9403 2 Posted November 6, 2012 So after the run around trying to see if I can get this surgery. I get told that the surgeon won't even see me at all b.c I am 39% body fat an not 40%. This is ridiculous! I am so upset about this. Has this happened to anyone else?
A New New Dawn 1,695 Posted November 6, 2012 Do you have any comorbities, such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes?
Ang9403 2 Posted November 6, 2012 Not that I know of. My dr hasn't tested me for any of that. She was certain I would get this surgery but I guess not. I know that's why the surgeon won't see me but I'm just upset about it.
A New New Dawn 1,695 Posted November 6, 2012 I can understand. Before going back to your doctor, I would suggest calling your insurance company and asking them what THEIR requirements are. If you meet your insurance requirements (which vary by company and plan) then perhaps explain that to the surgeon's office or seek out another surgeon. Don't give up! 1 DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! reacted to this
CaGottaBand 498 Posted November 6, 2012 There is a woman on a thread in Introductions saying that she was approved at 30 bmi. Maybe try another surgeon?
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! 12,703 Posted November 6, 2012 It sounds to me like an insurance requirement not a surgeon requirement. I would verify where the 40 bmi requirement is actually coming from.
FLORIDAYS 3,040 Posted November 6, 2012 I dont know your specifics...like weight and height but I do not understand about the body fat percentage. Do you mean BMI? I heard that they dropped the requirment for BMI to 30 so it may be your insurance company's standard. You may want to check with them... and if its not them I would go speak with another surgeon. Ang9403 2 Posted November 6, 2012 My insurance is tricare south. An I know what the requirements are you have to be 40 bmi too get it. I just think it's crap because it's one percent. An the surgeon won't even give me a chance basically.

It's not a matter of giving you a chance. If their requirement is a BMI of 40 then your surgeon has no choice but to abide by their rules. It's not the surgeon's fault. brittmarco 6 Posted November 6, 2012 Lie about your height. Say you are only 5'1". Slouch when they measure you. That will put you at 40 for sure. Good luck to you. I hate stupid insurance companies. I'm sure some skinny person made that # up

I was a BMI of 30 but self pay maybe that was the difference. Sorry to hear your frustrating news..keep searching you will find a doc willing to work with you. goalseeker 695 Posted November 7, 2012 I had the same exact thing happen to me. I went in 2011 and was told I was 5 pounds too light, insurance wouldn't cover it. They told me to come back in 6 months if nothing worked. I tried weight watchers again over the course of the next year and was still at the same weight. So when I went back I ate a HUGE burrito and drank a TON of liquids, wore my heaviest outfit and just barely made the BMI requirement. Good Luck! I know it is frustrating. 1 kassie2012 reacted to this
