Post Op November Bansters

Recommended Posts

So I was banded on Nov 1, and I have had a rough go of it. They put me on morphine after the surgery that made me sick. My surgery was over around 10:45 and I must of vomited for the rest of the day and into the night. They ended up switching me to a different pain medication, but because I was getttin sick I wasn't getting up. Not to mention that I pissed my self each time I vomited. Had to have DH get me some depends as the diapers the hospital provided sucked. The new pain medication came aroun 1 am but they took it away at 6 am. I ended up having to stay another day. I stopped vomiting around the 6 am wakup. I don't know how they expect you to get any sleep as they wake you up contantly. Ended up having to have two insulin shots. Didn't touch any of the meals they gave me. On Sat morning around 2 I vomited once again, but that was the last time.

Since I've been home I moved my self to the recliner because the flat bed was causing me to wease. I have been using the aspirator and walking 4 times a day, one extra driveway at a time.

To top it all off I started my period on Monday. So I know I'm anemic. Doc told me if I stated experiencing flu like symtoms that ment I wasn't getting enough Water in. Had a low grade fever yesterday so I have upped my liquid intake.

But I'm getting gas, not sure if its left over from the vomiting or just from the protien shakes. And I'm contsitpated. I'm sure thats from not getting enough Water also.

I am taking my Vitamins and Iron. And I feel better after I have stood up and walked. Streaching out those sore stomach muscles.

This whole thing is scaring me now. I didn't expect any of this. I expected the pain etc but not the immediate vomiting and what has trasnpired since then.

Any suggestions on the gas. May be so kids liquid gas x or some gas x strips?

I'm scared to drink liquids too afraid of throwing up. All of a sudden I'm getting a little hungry.

I'm so sorry that you are having such a rough time. Gas X may help but walking is the best way to get rid of the gas. It helps prevent pneumonia and blood clots! I hope you feel better soon! Every day should get better. :)

I was banded Monday November 5th. I was on morphine too overnight and hit that button a total of ten times before I left the hospital. I never thought the pain would be this bad but everyday I feel a little better. Now it's day three. I never vomited at all. I am taking a pain pill occasionally and I am walking and drinking my Protein shakes., etc., My lower stomach muscles are sore beyond anything I anticipated. I think most of the gas pains are about gone. I say all this because it sounds like you are having what is likely typical symptoms post op except for a few added bumps. Hang in!!!! Don't get too discouraged. You will do this along with us all. We are all here to cheer you on!!!! :-)

I was banded on Monday. I also had a hernia repair. My pain has mostly been from gas and at the incision on my upper right side. It is getting better each day. I'm somewhat nervous about eating but so far so good. I continually drink Water, have 1/4 - 1/2 c of Protein Shake a few timers a day then sf Jello and popcicles. The walking definitely helps the gas pain.

I also got banded on nov 5th. My incision sites are quite painful and I have some pain in my left shoulder area. I don't think it is gas pain. Has anyone else had pain in left shoulder?

My back feels tired from laying at 45 degrees as I can't seem to be able to lay down flat. I like to sleep on my side but I feel more pain in my abdomen/incision sites if I do. Is anyone experiencing this problem?

I have not weighed myself so I don't know if I've lost any. My doctor wants me on Clear Liquids and Protein Shakes this week and start on mushy foods next week. He wants to do first fill on week 3. I read from others in this forum that it has been more than a month and they still have not had a fill. I wonder what is the rush? Should I be concerned?

Any thoughts will be appreciated. To the newbie bandsters in this forum, good luck and share, share, share, please. Support is so important!!

My dr does first fill at 5 weeks. I think each one is different. I am also a side sleeper, getting into position is tough but once I'm there, it's all good. I hold a pillow on my stomach when I turn over. Walking is helping the gas. Hang in there, we'll get through it together!

Nice to hear that I'm not the norm and that it has been easier for some of you. I think my biggest problem right now is the pain in my back and not being able to lie down flat. I expected to be back a work today. But there is no way I could have. I still haven't had a bowel movement. I am on all liquids. But can have some clear juices to make up for the carbs you get in other foods. I know I am getting at least 56oz of my liquids from Water. The rest of the required 64 is from the juice. Getting around 50 to 60 grams of protien a day, but only taking in a couple hundred calories when I have 1200 to spend. The last time I weighed my self I actually weighed more than I did prior to the surgery.

Thanks! I'll try using the pillow in my tummy to turn over so I can sleep more comfortably.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
