I am finaly at the stage where I am going to have my sleep study next week...this is making me freak out just a bit! I am worried that I won't be able to fall asleep, or that I'll do something "weird" in my sleep, or that I will find out I have horrible sleep apnea....who had to do a sleep study and how did it go? Any pointers?

Thanks in advance =)

I did a sleep study before surgery but I was hoping for sleep apnea. I had been denied by one point on my BMI so I needed sleep apnea to qualify. I have terrible insomnia so I asked my sleep doctor if I could take some Benadryl before. She agreed as they needed me to sleep and not lay there all night awake. Sometime in the middle of the night they woke me up to apply a CPAP as I did have sleep apnea. The best part was that I got the best 4 hours of sleep in years. I felt sooo good. Since then I have used my CPAP every night and I feel great. BTW- I was finally approved for the band and I'm down 40 lbs in 4 months. I will most likely not need the CPAP in a few more months, but I actually like it. (I know I'm rare!) Bring a book or a magazine, comfy pj's that you're not afraid to be seen in by strangers, and relax. Its a little hard though because of all the wires glued to your head, but it really isn't an issue. Good Luck!

PS- Sleep apnea can inhibit weight loss, so its good to know if you have it so it can be treated.

I had a sleep study done, found out I have sleep apnea.. yes the wires connected to yourt head and body are a bit bothersome.. I was a bit hot from them and kept waking up.. the tech was really nice and helpful.. It was weird knowing they had on a monitor watching everything.. and then a mic by you to hear you breath and sleep. lol.. I didn't get the CPAP.. I hear you sleep better than you did in years! I need to go in for another visit.. so they can put the mask on and do more study they said. I need to make that appt once I am all healed up. Good Luck!

Stay off caffeine the day you go in. I was able to sleep believe it or not. Pretty crazy.

I did one a year ago.... they woke me up in the frst 3 minutes of going to sleep to put a CPAP on... took a while to get used to the mask. When I went to go pick everything up from the RX the guy there talked me into a nose only mask, these things sit on my nostrals... HATE IT. Trying to get a new mask now that I am using the machine again and they cost $400+ here where I am at and trying to get the RX to bill the insurance company is a real PIA. Good luck. My wife slept in the chair next to me... good times! :)

When I was in a hospital in Los Angeles I was told I had sleep apnea. Talked to a specialist down there but my insurance denied a sleep study :( I used to feel like I was choking to death when I slept. Horrible feeling! I have lost 40 lbs since that hospital stay and no longer feel like I am going to die when I sleep.

I just completed my sleep study and got the results "moderate sleep apnea" not good news but I was expecting it. I'm overweight and I snore two symptoms that predispose one to sleep apnea, and I wake up at night gasping for air as if my windpipe was constricted. I'm confident after I get my lap band Nov 9 and start losing weight the apnea will improve or better just go a way!

i had to do it also and it was business as usual. i got there about 8pm

took about 10 min for them to put wires on (i have pics on my blog showing the wires and other things)

and just chilled out til i was ready to go to sleep. they didnt wake me up until it was time for me to get up.

the 2nd time, i slept with the cpac and it was alittle more uncomfortable because i had the head gear on.

but it was doable.

so go to this place and go to sleep as that is what you are doing.

First time I went for the sleep study, I figured no problem, I will fall asleep easily.... Hahaha! After 6 hours of not being able to fall asleep, maybe sleeping 10 minutes every hour or so..... It was 6 am and I think I said.... F thus, I'm done. Got rescheduled, did some research and took sleepy time tea, no caffeine all day prior, took Benadryl and NyQuil. Still had trouble, but they got enough results and everyone was happy.

All in all, it was a miserable experience.

I had all the same worries and really didn't sleep much that night, the glue they used on the pads was the worst, it took a week to get out of my hair. The craziest part it I'm not getting a machine, I want to be banded to stop the apnea, for me it was a waist of money I think they do it to test our will . But be strong and bring a phone with music on it to help you sleep, worked for me. Good luck and prayers!

I went to school to be a sleep tech and the whole process still freaked me out a little.. it took me a little while to get to sleep but once I did I slept for the rest of the night and in the morning my sleep tech said she didn't see any problems!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
