6 Month Supervised Diet

Recommended Posts

I am new to this website! I have a question. I start my 6 month supervised diet within the next two weeks, and I was curious as to how it works. My BMI is about 43~ and if I were to lose around 15-20 pounds my BMI would be under 40. If I were to drop less than 40 BMI( I do not have any co-morbiditys) would they still follow through with my surgery. The last thing I want to do is go through 6 months of supervised diets just to be denied by my insurance.

Hi! I also have a bmi of 43 and just started the 4th month of my 6 month waiting period. My dr advised me to lose 5-10 lbs before surgery-20 at most as to not go below a bmi of 40. She said it probably be ok if I lost more but could result in an insurance headache.

Most doctors submit your original weigh in to the insurance. Also most doctors want you to loose some weight before surgery to show you are commited to a new lifestyle.

Your insuracne may require you to lose a certin amount of weight in the 6 months. I am starting month two and my insurance dose require that I lose a certin % in that time. I dont know how it works about the bmi they did not say anything to me about that.

I was in the same boat. My BMI was 42 & now I'm at 38. My doctor said I needed to lose at least 15 and I lost 20 in the 6 month diet. I was approved with no problems. No one ever told me not to lose "too much" as long as your weight history reflects an qualified BMI I think you should be ok. Just focus on starting good habits.

It is mainly to get rid of as much excess fat in your liver as possible.

They actually go by your initial BMI. The surgeon & insurance want to see you can commit to the lifestyle change. My BMI was barely over 40 with no comorbidities and I was approved on my first submission. The liquid diet before surgery us to shrink the excess fat off your liver because they have to lift your liver to get to the area of your stomach. Fatty livers are very thick & heavy so the liquid diet helps with that.
