More Pain Than I Was Expecting!!

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Monday. Still very sore. But I had a hernia repaired also so I'm thinking that's where alot of the soreness is coming from. Eating broth & low fat creamed Soups now too, although not much of an appetite. Also struggling to get enough Water. Anyone else having these troubles or just me?

Yes, it sounds like me a few weeks ago. I too had a hernia repair and the swelling makes it difficult for awhile, but I promise every day you will get better and better. Walk, walk ,walk & sip, sip, sip and walk some more.

Hang in there!

Are you using a heating pad? That helps!

I believe this is the norm not matter if you had a hernia repaired or not. Like maddy said heat does help ease things off. At the start healing is most important, just make sure you get enough liquid down- you do not want to get dehydrated- you thing you hurt now- dehydration will make you think you are dying. I was told to drink room temp liquids to start with, I ask why and they said it would be easier. I ask what would happen if I drank cold water- they said it might be uncomfortable, but it wouldn't hurt anything. I drank ice cold Water and for me that worked. If you like hot- drink a cup of SF hot tea if you prefer. Just stay hydrated. Once the swelling is down and you are not feeling like crap start trying to make sure you are getting the right amount Protein.

(Disclaimer- no I am not a doctor, however, I have questioned both my doctor and nutritionist to the point of exhaustion on their part and this is what I was told)

I too was banded on Monday and had a hernia repair. I am having a lot of gas, feel full and having a hard time getting the liquids in, I am trying to take a sip every few minutes and getting up and walking around my house lots. So not just you darn gas. I think if I didnt have this gas issue I would be able to eat.

gas x helped me a lot and of course the heating pad was a must. a laxative is also a great idea to get thing moving and out. Hot Drinks also makes it feel better...healing takes time and it is uncomfortable a lot but so does being over weight and sick from what it csuses you will get better very soon hang in there.........line dancer

I was banded on Monday (Oct 29) also and still feel uncomfortable in my abdomen and side. It feels as if I can feel the band and the tubing and it's very uncomfortable and bothersome. I'm doing good on Clear Liquids and even added some cream of chicken Soup and pudding to my diet yesterday. I just don't like the feeling in my stomach and side that goes into my shoulder. Is this normal? Am I rushing my healing?

The shoulder pain from the CO2 they use in the surgery is horrible but know it does get better. I'm 10 days post op and I still have a twinge every now and then when I lie down. I slept in a recliner for the first 5 days, just could not stand the pain if I tried my bed. Now I can finally use a pillow under me and get comfortable. Everyone is different too. Heating pad made me feel better... not that I think it medically reduced the gas pains but it was comfort and warm to me. I didn't add pudding till just yesterday but did thin out cream soup... just go real slow and sip the food and WALK, WALK, WALK.

I am not sure if you should or could "feel" the band and tubing? It's pretty deep in your belly and surrounded by fat (atleast mine is... LOL). You may be feeling the pulling of the internal stiches around the port area. Today my pain comes and goes and its my navel area that is sore....

Everyone says walk, walk, walk post surgery. Are y'all talking about walking around your house, around your yard or around the block? Or just whatever you can tolerate? And how often? Like once or twice an hour?

Whatever you can tolerate. First day, paced my hallway. 2nd day went outside for more distance. Dr said during the day get up and walk every 2 hrs, not only for gas, but reduce risk of blood clots.

I'm a week post op today and just started experiencing the gas pains in my shoulder yesterday and it sucks because today is going to be my first day back at work! I'm hoping the gas pains only last a couple weeks!!!

The pain in your shoulder is caused by something else. It's your left shoulder right? Well my dr shed some light on that pain a few weeks ago. It is your tube rubbing against your diaphragm that causes a little inflammation.

Check out the tread " shoulder pain- revealed" they do a better job explaining it than me.

My dr had me take gel cap Advil. Heating pads helped relieve the pain. Call your dr for instructions if it doesn't go away.

Hope this helps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
