Can I Push A Bowel Movement Out??

Recommended Posts

It's been 5 days and I am very uncomfortable. Called dr last night and he said I can take a laxative. I feel like all I need to do is push some but afraid I will hurt something internally. Sorry, so tmi but help!! LOL

if its been 5 days, and if i was you, i would take a laxative and let it do its thing...come on out GF.....

if you push *hard*

you could tear a smidge and be very uncomfortable afterwards.

I feel for you, but I agree with Carolinagirl. You do not want to hurt yourself and pull a stitch. Try laxative!!Good luck. Karen

Yep, don't push really hard. The laxative will work believe me. Drink a lot of Water. Worse comes to worse, ask Dr about Fleet Enema or Glycerine Suppositories.

I had my surgery last Wednesday 10/24. I was a little worried myself so I bought the suppositories (on Saturday) however I never used them. My hubby seems to think that since I've been taking in nothing but liquids there was nothing for me to push out!

Well my first BM was yesterday (6days later) and it actually occurred while we were enduring hurricane sandy. (TMI I know)

If you want a laxative pill dulcolax (sp) is a very small pill like the size of a baby aspirin or smaller

Milk of Mag and prune juice. Black and white makes it right. Just sayin....

You can also try one of the teas on the market, they can be a little more gentle than laxative pills. The worst part of pushing too hard is that you may develop hemorrhoids, and those are miserable!

Unfortunately, this is all normal too and many of us experience this. You are not taking in much/any Fiber and probably not drinking your full recommended amount yet either.

As able, try to up your liquids. That helped me a lot so I didn't have a reoccurence of what you are experiencing!!!!

In light of all my corny jokes that my kids roll their eyes at..... I won't say "hang in there" and instead "hang loose" my friend! :)

This is a common problem. I am 1 year out from surgery and still need to take stool softener twice a day and Miralax once a week. I just discovered that using Stevia sweeter in my drinks works great. It is not unusual to go 5-10 days at first because of the low food intake. Keep up the liquids and as stated above, hang loose and relax.

The first month until I was on solids I used a single serving packet of a Fiber supplement 2x each day mixed in diet hot cocoa, tea or even Water. You cannot taste it, smell it or even know its there. It kept me quite regular.

I guess I am having the opposite problem. My surgery was last week on 10/24 and I haven't had a regular bowel movement yet, the ones that I have had have been really really really soft, sometimes it's actually diarrhea. I asked my doctor about it and he said that it could be just my body reacting to the barium drink. I am getting concerned because I really want to make sure I eliminate waste. I don't want or need to take a laxative, any other insight that you all may have would be helpful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
