Allergic To Multivitamins???

Recommended Posts

Her everyone! Last week when I first met with the bariatric coordinator, she told me about needing to take chewable vitamins after surgery and that I should go ahead and start them now. So, being the compliant patient, I got the Flintstones chewables simply because I didn't know if gummies would be a good idea postop. Took one yesterday and went about my business as usual. Today, however, I am about to claw my skin off. Only thing I can figure is an allergic reaction to the Vitamins. Anyone else had this problem???? Okay, back to my spaghetti scooper thingy since I can't scratch my flippin' back!!!! GRRR!!!!! Sure wish that Benadryl would kick in!!!

CALL YOUR DOCTOR!!

Allergic Reaction Side Effects

  • Since Multivitamins contain so many Vitamins and minerals, allergic reactions are certainly possible. Mild allergic reactions can include itchiness and a few hives. If you experience these side effects, stop use and contact your doctor. Should you experience more advanced signs of an allergic reaction or anaphylactic shock, such as trouble breathing, chest pain, widespread hives or a swollen facial region, visit the closest emergency room immediately.

Vitamin Interactions

  • Additional side effects are possible if you take other medications. Some of the medications known to react negatively with Multivitamins include diuretics, blood pressure medication, tretinoin, trimethoprim and ibuprofen. This doesn't necessarily mean you can't take a Multivitamin with these medications. Just check in with your doctor. A shift in dosage may be necessary. In addition, dairy and other Calcium products can interfere with the body's absorption of various Vitamins and minerals. Again, consult your doctor if you take Calcium supplements, antacids with calcium or have a diet high in dairy.

Yep, you can be. I am allergic to multi's, have been since I was a kid. The problem I have is once they get into my system I start hurling everyday as soon as I wake up, like morning sickness. When my mom tried me on Flinstones as a kid this happened, doctor said I was allergic and I couldn't take the multi. Instead I have to take the most important ones one at a time. I have had my labs checked often and I am doing well with taking my B12 in the morning, calcium chews mid morning, Vit D at night. They just keep a check on all my labs to make sure I am getting everything I need.

This sucks, but it's better than living with the side effects.

My appointment is 8:30 tomorrow morning and I took 50 mg Benadryl, so do I call them today or just not take it tomorrow and tell him then. I don't have any hives/swelling/rashes, so I'm thinking just wait, especially since I have not actually met my surgeon yet and he technically doesn't know me from Adam!
