Be tough and prepare your liver by eating what your surgeon has recommended. I went on Protein shakes and small dinner salads witrh broiled chicken breast for my three meals. Then I switched to tuna every now and then. sugar free jellos and SF popsicles help at night. Start taking a good mix of multi-Vitamins and minerals to fortify your body. Start practicing chewing your food 25 times before swallowing if you're allowed solid food. Some doctors dont require liquids only up to 5 days and counting. I did mine almost 2 months ahead of surgery to lose some weight, teach myself eating habits and sipping Water 60 minutes after eating. You will have to do all of this after surgery. Get a list of foods allowed by your doctor after surgery and purchase them now. (clear broths, baby oatmeal, apple sauces). Have gas-x chewables, heating pad available.

Best wishes and Good Luck on your new journey.

I am on a basically liquid diet. My physician does this with all his patients. Water, yogurt, cream of wheat, fat free cream Soup, skim milk/almond milk, Jello, Protein shakes.

I am on my third day and my severe headahes have gone away. Also not as hungry.

I am scheduled for November 7th also. Cutting out the caffeine is a killer. I am eating Protein Shakes 3 times a day. I have to admit it fills me up more than I anticipated.

Yes it is not bad once you get into it and your body is getting used to the new diet, I think it is a great way to prepare for post up

Home from surgery a few hours ago. I checked in at 8 am, surgery at 10 am home at 330pm.

After the procedure... Woke up with bad chest pain from the gas... A sore throat and my port site hurt like hell

Pain meds helped the chest pain... Then it was referred to shoulder... The pain is manageable now. Prescription for liquid hydrocodone\tylenol. Only have taken once since hospital.

Port side has just a few drops of red drainage - normal... Still very sore

Sore throat is slowly going away.

No issues with drinking fluids today.

Steady on my feet... But mostly taking it easy.

I am a side sleeper, so I hope I get some rest tonight sleeping on my back.

Hope everyone else went ok today!

Kayla- I guess I was so used to the liquid diet ...My body didn't care for a few more days of liquid. Make sure you are drinking your Water and Protein shakes! I also am mixing some plain Greek yogurt with my vanilla Protein powder- works great.

If you are that uncomfortable ... Maybe your doctor will allow you limited soft foods now.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
