if your only on liquids you may not go until you start solids. If you can tolerate prune juice it works well. I didnt go for about two weeks once I started eating solid foods but I took a laxative before surgery also.

It was about a week after surgery before I finally went. I still don't go like I used to even now, maybe every 2-3 days not every day.

The stool softener is a very wise idea. Keep taking it until you do go so you don't end up in pain.

My doctor recommended Milk of Magnesia - just be prepared bc these often produce "sudden" results. Not to worry if you get very loose stools. I panicked but, that too, did pass.

I was banded on a Monday and took stool softener (overdid it a bit) and ended up with the runs on Friday.........almost 6 weeks out and I still have to take softener every few days.

Hiya Kittylove,

OMG, I thought I would die!!! Nine days it took, and honestly I am not regular like I was before banded. I found through trial and error what works for me in helping me get some relief. I eat prunes and rasins. Occassionaly prune or grape juice. Not too much because these contain a lot of sugar (carbs). However, it helps and does not affect my weight loss.

Now, since you just got banded you can not eat these itmes, Keep taking the stool softner. Drink lots of Water, Oh, also I do drink an 8 ounce glass of Water mixed with metamucil every day, this I find helps me too! I am almost going every day now. (knock on wood), but it did take a very long while before this happened...

I made the mistake of drinking some Metamucil after I had my surgery because I was worried about not going...... BIG mistake! I was sooo uncomfortable and miserable feeling. It actually had me a little scared because I was heaving/gagging. SO what ever you do don't try to drink any kind of Fiber drink like Metamucil or fiber one. I think i ended up taking some milk of magnesia or mylanta (which ever one is for Constipation lol!). It didn't really seem to do anything, probably because I was on liquids :)

Pain meds make you constipated. One of the reasons I stopped taking them after a few days.

I mixed the powder in with my yogurt.

Again, this is going to be through trial and error you will find what works for you. Some may say MOM is very very gassy and leads to feeling very bloated as well.

Since you just got out of surgery, keep taking the stool softners and drink plenty of Water. Honestly, these 'other' precautions are 'last resorts' when you are still having a hard time going....

Best of luck,

I just made the same horrible mistake! I drank it too fast and I PB'd twice and still feel stuck. Any words of advice on how to get this to pass? Feels like the fiber "expanded" in the pouch and plugged the hole. I am hoping my esophagus does it's muscle magic and gets it to pass.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
