Unfortunately we can't answer that because every surgeon is different and has different required diets. Some don't have a pre op diet at all.

Your best bet is to contact your surgeon specifically and ask what he/she requires.

Missy is correct (as always - geesh, this woman is FULL of knowledge :) ) each surgeon is different. My own doctor said it goes patient by patient for him; I didn't have to do any pre-op diet but I opted to do one on my own, just to get geared up for the post-op diet. I started 12 days before surgery with Protein shakes all day then a light salad at night, then at 5 days pre-op I went to all skim milk or Protein Shakes. I think a good pre-op diet gets you ready for the liquids post-op.

Also - Missy - If I haven't told you lately - you're awesome and so inspiring. Thank you for being so active on this website and sharing your knowledge/experience with others.

I'm a little biased as this was my surgeon, but Dr. Trace Curry has an office in Columbus and Cincinnati. I don't know Ohio that well, but I think Akron is not too far away. I'm in Northern Kentucky, so I went through the Cincinnati office.

I wasn't told to do any diet pre op. Just told to eat a light dinner the night before and nothing after midnight. I went to Outback for ribs. I considered that lite 3 yrs ago!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
